The use of metallic expandable tracheal stents in the management of inoperable malignant tracheal obstruction

Abstract: Tracheal neoplasms account for less than 1% of all malignancies. In spite of their low incidence, these tumors represent potentially lethal phenomena. In cases of airway compromise and unresectable disease, the airway may be maintained by repeated bronchoscopic debulkings, and the use of CO(2) laser, silicone Montgomery T-tube and tracheal stents. The use of metallic expandable stents to relieve airway obstruction in advanced tracheal tumors was previously reported. Our aim was to evaluate the use of metallic … Show more

“…In cases where this data is available, characterization of local stimuli arising from solid and fluid mechanics may help to improve knowledge of the relative importance of these stimuli. Although metallic stents have been studied in the human tracheobronchial tree, 4,13,14 there are only a few works which analyze their interaction with the tracheobronchial mucosa. This analysis was performed mainly for the Palmaz stent in rabbits 39 , lambs 48 and pigs, 40 and for Gianturco stent in dogs.…”

“…The self-expandable nitinol stent has shown the best results in both benign and malignant lesions of the tracheobronchial tree 14,15 . However, there has not been a comparative study or series of sufficient sample size to substantiate these results.…”
