Secondary tracheal tumors: a systematic review

Abstract: Background: Secondary tracheal tumors arise from mural invasion by primary tumors in adjacent organs, metastatic lymph nodes or blood-born metastasis from distant sites. This systematic review aims to assess the presentation, management options, and clinical outcomes of these uncommon non-tracheal malignancies. Methods: Electronic searches of the MEDLINE database were performed to identify case series and individual case reports of tracheal invasion by primary non-tracheal tumors or metastatic disease. “…A systematic review on secondary tracheal tumors by Madariaga and Gaissert examined the management of multiple types of carcinoma with tracheal invasion. 109 Because of their focus on other nonthyroid pathologies and various treatment plans in addition to tracheal resection, the data resolution with regards to thyroid cancer is inevitably lower. The present analysis exclusively focused on locally invasive thyroid cancer managed via tracheal resection in order to increase resolution and include more patient-level data with the aim to further guide treatment decisions in this specific patient population.…”

“…An individualized treatment approach can be tailored to optimize the clinical outcomes. 5 The overall prognosis may depend on eradication of the primary tumor, the prostate-specific antigen level, oligo or disseminated metastasis, and overall disease burdeon. 6 Therefore, physicians need to pay particular attention to the overall symptoms of a patient with malignancy, keep EBM in mind, and make an appropriate referral or preferably, discuss the case with a multidisciplinary team.…”

“…The interest of this case is essentially due to two reasons: the rarity of the metastatic localization of hepatocellular carcinoma, which, as reported in the literature, has an incidence of 0.04% [1] and the importance of rigid bronchoscopy in the resolution of respiratory failure secondary to tracheal obstruction.…”
