The Use of a Synthetic Prostaglandin Analogue to Induce Oestrus in Mares

Abstract: A clinical trial involving 359 mares was conducted to ascertain the clinical value of a synthetic prostaglandin analogue (fluprostenol, ICI-81,008) structurally related to PGF2oc for treating mares in prolonged dioestrus. Some 263 mares (73.3%) displayed oestrus within 5 days of a first intramuscular injection of 250 mug fluprostenol and, of those mares later examined for pregnancy, 108 (40%) were found to have conceived during the first induced oestrus. A further 21 mares (8%) cycled normally and conceived to… Show more

“…Availability of new drugs such as human chorionic gonadotropin [46], prostaglandin F2a [47,48], or the long-lasting gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog deslorelin [49] allowed to effectively influence the equine estrous cycle and ovulation. On the diagnostic side, the pioneering work of O.J.…”

“…Fluprostenol showed no adverse side effects whatever and it became the first prostaglandin marketed in the world for luteolytic purposes in domestic animals. The late Dr Mike Cooper, a highly experienced cattle reproduction veterinary practitioner, played a pivotal role in the development and testing of the prostaglandin F analogues .…”

“…Nowadays, PGF 2 α and its analogues are used widely and successfully throughout the horse breeding world, to treat prolonged dioestrus, shorten the dioestrous interval in mares that missed being inseminated or were infected in the previous oestrus, synchronise ovulation for embryo transfer or any other of the modern breeding technologies , and stimulate prolonged uterine contractions to expel accumulated uterine fluids in mares with endometritis . In addition, PGF 2 α has been used to induce abortion and parturition , as a possible treatment to stimulate maternal behaviour and thereby overcome foal rejection and, occasionally, to stimulate erection and ejaculation in shy or reluctant stallions .…”
