SummaryOver the past 50 years, per season pregnancy rate in Thoroughbred mares have risen from 70 to >90% and foaling rates from 55 to >80%. Some of the significant pharmacological treatments and diagnostic methods which have driven this marked improvement in breeding efficiency are reviewed. They include the application of artificial lighting to hasten the onset of ovulatory oestrous cyclicity in early Spring, rapid steroid hormone assays to aid in determining the stage and normality of the mare's cycle, prostaglandin analogues, synthetic progestagens and Gonadotrophin-releasing Hormone (GnRH) analogues to better control and manipulate her cycle to good effect, transrectal ultrasound scanning to monitor follicle growth, endometrial architecture and ovulation and to allow accurate, early pregnancy diagnosis thereby enabling successful ablation of one of twin conceptuses. Also, flexible videoendoscopy to monitor physiological and pathological changes in the uterine endometrium and rigid laparoscopy to apply prostaglandin to the oviducts to dislodge and clear suspected blockages of them to restore fertility. The outbreak of Contagious Equine Metritis in Newmarket in the spring of 1977 and the swabbing-related changes to mare and stallion management, plus the improved veterinary hygiene methods, which followed are also recounted. The past half century has witnessed many technical and therapeutic advances that have enhanced tremendously the diagnostic and treatment capabilities of studfarm veterinary surgeons. They, in turn, have improved greatly the efficiency of breeding Thoroughbreds and other types of horses.

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan mengamati pola pertumbuhan folikel dan keberhasilan inseminasi buatan dengan semen cair pada induk kuda warmblood yang disinkronisasi estrus dan ovulasi (ovsynch). Induk kuda berjumlah lima ekor berumur 6-18 tahun digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Sinkronisasi estrus dilakukan pada induk kuda yang memiliki korpus luteum berdiameter minimal 3,0 cm dengan injeksi prostaglandin 7,5 mg secara intramuskular. Induksi ovulasi dilakukan dengan memberikan hCG 1500 IU secara intravena 48 jam setelah sinkronisasi estrus dan diulang setiap 24 jam sampai terjadinya ovulasi folikel (dosis jamak) yang diamati dengan ultrasound. Inseminasi buatan dilakukan berulang mengikuti setiap pemberian hCG sampai terjadinya ovulasi dengan dosis inseminasi 1,5x10 9 spermatozoa. Sinkronisasi estrus dan ovulasi dengan menggunakan hCG dosis jamak menghasilkan ovulatori dominan folikel berdiameter 4,81±0,92 cm dan korpus rubrum berdiameter 3,82±0,45 cm serta menghasilkan 60% kebuntingan. Kesimpulan sinkronisasi ovulasi dengan pemberian hCG dosis jamak pada kuda warmblood yang diinseminasi buatan dengan semen cair efektif menghasilkan kebuntingan yang tinggi. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Kata kunci: inseminasi buatan, kuda warmblood, ovsynch, ultrasound ABSTRACT PENDAHULUANKuda warmblood di Indonesia jumlahnya sangat terbatas. Kuda jenis ini diimpor dari Eropa dan Australia untuk memenuhi kebutuhan olah raga berkuda, terutama jumping dan dressage. Peningkatan jumlah kuda warmblood di Indonesia sangat penting untuk menunjang akses atlet olah raga berkuda terhadap kuda yang lebih berkualitas sehingga dapat meningkatkan prestasi olah raga berkuda. Peningkatan populasi telah diusahakan melalui inseminasi buatan menggunakan semen beku impor yang telah dilakukan pada tahun 1997 di Artayasa Stable. Pada tahun 2005 juga telah dilakukan inseminasi buatan dengan semen cair dan semen beku produksi dalam negeri di Detasemen Kavaleri Berkuda Parongpong pada kuda crossbred dengan tingkat keberhasilan yang masih rendah (Arifiantini, 2008).Tingkat keberhasilan inseminasi buatan pada kuda dipengaruhi berbagai faktor, antara lain jenis semen yang digunakan (Sieme et al., 2004), intensitas pelaksanaan inseminasi (Sieme et al., 2003), dan tempat deposisi semen pada organ reproduksi (Squires et al., 1998;Sieme et al., 2004). Waktu yang tepat ketika menempatkan semen pada uterus juga memengaruhi keberhasilan inseminasi buatan, sehinggga induksi ovulasi dan pengamatan pertumbuhan folikel dengan ultrasound banyak digunakan dalam pelaksanaan inseminasi buatan pada kuda (Samper, 2001) di negara subtropis. Untuk mendukung keberhasilan inseminasi buatan pada kuda warmblood di Indonesia maka perlu penelitian tentang sinkronisasi estrus, lisis korpus luteum, dan pertumbuhan folikel.
