The Ultrastructure of Bovine Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumours

Abstract: Abstract. Bovine peripheral nerve sheath tumours from 30 cattle were similar ultrastructurally to human schwannomas and neurofibromas. Bovine neurofibromatous tissue had large amounts of extracellular material. primarily collagen and electron lucent granular material. The principal cells had basal laminae and a disorganized proliferation of the plasmalemma. Axons were consistently seen and were surrounded by the plasmalemma of principal cells. The principal cells seemed to be Schwann cells or variants of them.… Show more

“…The histopathological evaluation confirmed a neurofibroma, with a main differential diagnosis of Schwannoma. In cattle, Schwannoma is uncommon with reports in the skin (AHMADI et al, 2012) and in the multicentric form (CANFIELD, 1978). Another interesting feature is the formation of concentric complexes, suggestive of nerve fibers, observed in cases of neurofibroma, which strengthened the diagnosis in this case.…”

“…Positive immunostaining to Glut‐1 was consistent with a malignant tumour (Younes and others 1996, Yamaguchi and others 2003). Moreover, the neoplastic cells had the ultrastructural characteristics of Schwann cells: desmosome‐like junctions, intertwining cytoplasmic extensions and basal lamina (Canfield 1978b). The malignancy of the tumours was suggested by the presence of multiple areas of necrosis and haemorrhage, and the anaplastic characteristics of the neoplastic cells.…”

“…The most common sites of involvement are the brachial plexus, heart, and intercostal nerves (Figure 1A) [44,45]. Many of these tumors closely resemble PNSTs associated with human neurofibromatosis grossly, histologically, and ultrastructurally (Figure 1A-D) [42,46]. Both schwannoma [44,[47][48][49][50] and neurofibroma [50][51][52][53] are reported, but the distinction is not always clear in the literature, as lesions are often simply diagnosed as "neurofibromatosis" or PNST.…”
