The tumor microenvironment may trigger lymphoproliferation in cardiac myxoma

Abstract: Highlights Lymphoproliferative disorders (LPD) in cardiac myxomas (CM) has been occasionally reported, and chronic inflammation in response to viral infection may be the key. CM can upregulate autophagy, creating a favorable environment for Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)-driven oncogenesis. P62 accumulates when autophagy is inhibited, and aberrant excessive p62 may result from autophagy defect, causing oxidative stress and tumorigenesis. NanoS… Show more

“…Alcian blue staining (AB) and periodic acid Schiff staining (PAS) were also positive (Figure 4 ). The above pathological findings were consistent with the pathological features of myxoma[ 5 - 7 ]. Combined with the results of preoperative echocardiography and postoperative pathological examination, it can be inferred that the acute lower extremity arterial embolism was caused by shedding of a left CM.…”

“…Although the gut microbiome is influenced by the contacts with pets and may play a protective role, one substantial risk related to animal contact is getting exposed to animal viruses, such as coronaviruses. Since RNA viruses and DNA viruses have induced brain tumors and hematological and cardiac neoplasms [ 40 , 60 ], it may be plausible that COVID-19 may cause hyperactivation of immune cells, resulting in chronic inflammation, which may act as promoting factor. In some settings, it may induce the reawakening of dormant cancer cells such as neutrophil extracellular traps [ 61 ].…”

“…Although this may explain a higher probability of spontaneous LPD regression after MTX cessation in RA patients, the causal relationship between EBV and MTX-LPD is still unclear [ 22 ]. Another study reported that the tumor microenvironment with upregulation of autophagosome may support the development of EBV-related LPD [ 26 ]. Our case had disease regression after she concluded MTX and underwent surgery for perforated jejunum.…”
