The Try-Out of a Team Sport Performance Assessment Procedure in Elementary and Junior High School Physical Education Classes

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to describe the results of a try-out of Gréhaigne, Godbout, and Bouthier’s (1997) team sport performance assessment procedure in elementary and junior high school physical education classes and to expose issues related to its potential implementation. Six elementary and junior high school teachers were asked to use this assessment procedure with their Grade 5 to 8 class-groups for a 6-week period in order to gather data for the establishment of performance norms. As it was develope… Show more

“…Thus, despite the satisfactory average level of interobserver reliability obtained in this study, teachers and coaches may never take for granted that all their students or players will readily display, from the start, a high level of agreement. They should remember that observing skills also need to be learned, hence a need for supervision and tutoring on their part, especially when students encounter new observation variables (Richard et al, 1999;Godbout & Desrosiers, 2005). Some students will learn faster or more easily than others.…”

“…Whatever the instrument selected and given their different orientation, both procedures may be considered useful in a Teaching Games for Understanding approach to sport education which puts a major emphasis on tactical learning, without ignoring the importance of technical skills as well. As demonstrated by Richard et al (1999) in their experimentation of the TSAP with Grade 5-8 classes, teachers were impressed with the type of information that could be reinvested into their teaching of team sport concepts. Furthermore, the participating teachers in Richard et al's (1999) study were unanimous in stating that the type of information offered by the TSAP was objective and comprehensible enough even for younger students (10-11 years old).…”

“…Equally thorny at the time were the theoretical and methodological problems about what were appropriate instructional outcomes and how they might be measured. Twenty years later, we are beginning to see sustained commitments to this research topic (Mitchell, Griffin, & Oslin, 1994;Richard, Godbout, Tousignant, & Grehaigne, 1999). …”
