The Toxicity of Mauli Banana (Musa Acuminata) Stem Water Extract on Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell in Vitro

Abstract: Objective: Since mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) can differentiate into bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament, they can be used to treat aggressiveperiodontitis. The limited number of MSCs requires replenishment of growth factor in the cell culture process. Since growth factor is quite expensive,an alternative material is needed. Mauli banana stem has antioxidant and immunomodulatory properties. Methanol extract of Mauli banana stem isknown to be toxic toward MSCs; therefore, another solvent with a non-toxic e… Show more

“…MB has a tannin content of 67%, and the tannins found in bananas are condensed tannins or proanthocyanidins. 13,16,26 Proanthocyanidins effectively strengthen the collagen fiber matrix, which is the organic matrix of dentin, and keep collagen fibers from degradation. 27 Proanthocyanidins can inhibit demineralization by reducing collagen degradation by dentine proteases, inhibiting proteolytic activity, and protecting dentin from enzymatic degradation.…”

“…One of the herbal ingredients that has been shown to affect caries and wound healing is the Mauli banana stem. 13,14 Mauli banana (MB) stem is a South Kalimantan native plant with numerous benefits, including anti-caries activity. The research of Apriasari et al 14 stated that MB extract has effective antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans.…”

“…19 The main ingredients contained in the banana mauli stem are tannins (67.69%), saponins, (14.49%), alkaloids (0 , 34%), and flavonoids (0.25%). 3 Previous studies conducted by Apriasari et al (2013) have proven that extracts of banana mauli stem at a concentration of 25% can inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans. 2 The results of Apriasari's research (2014) show that mauli banana extract at a concentration of 80% has the ability to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans.…”

“…Inflammatory conditions of the pulp that can be treated by pulpcapping are pulpal diagnosis in the form of reversible pulpitis. 8 Pulpcapping treatment is divided into indirect pulpcapping and direct pulpcapping. Indirect pulpcapping is a treatment to maintain the pulp to keep it vital by placing the pulp protection agent on the base of the cavity where the pulp chamber is still covered with a layer of dentin.…”
