The tectonic evolution of Lake Eğirdir, West Turkey

Abstract: Lake Eğirdir is one of the most important fresh-water lakes of Turkey. It has a tectonics-related origin. The area formed under a roughly N-S compressional tectonic regime during the Middle Miocene. The stresses caused slip faults west and east of Isparta Angle, and the lake formed at the junction of these faults. The area subsided between normal faults, thus creating the topographic condition required for a lake. The lacustrine sediments have fundamentally different lithologies. After the Late Miocene, centra… Show more

“…However, the type localities (Büyük Menderes River) of these species correspond to the grabens (depressions) located in the eastern extension of the Aegean horst‐graben system, which has been developing under the control of an extensional tectonic regime for the last 5 million years (Tasdelen et al ., 2015). As these tectonic basins became filled, thus becoming lakes after the Pliocene (Karaman, 2010), we suggest that Oxynoemacheilus populations in the Büyük Menderes River basin were not isolated for long enough for speciation.…”

“…In the early Mio cene, de pres sions such as the Hoyran, Akêehir, Beyêehir, Burdur and EÈirdir bas ins (Fig. 1B) formed due to tectonic up lift in the West ern Taurus Moun tains (Karaman, 2010). The de vel op ment of these bas ins, which are bor dered by ac tive faults of var i ous ori en ta tions, is ex plained by coun ter-clock wise ro ta tion of the area west of the Isparta Bend (Kissel and Poisson, 1987;Mor ris and Rob ert son, 1993;Karaman, 2010).…”

“…Lake Eğirdir is the main source of the Kaşıkara basin and the Kovada basin. This lake extends in the K-G direction and provides a unique view of the northern part of the lake at an angle of about 40° to the west as a result of the deformation experienced in the FBFZ-IB line (Karaman, 2010). Located in the north of the lake, seasonal rivers coming from the Kaşıkara basin, Karakuş Mountains and Sultan Mountains, and Pupa Stream and Özdere stream are the main streams feeding the lake (Figs.…”
