The Technological Progress of the Fuel Consumption Rate for Passenger Vehicles in China: 2009–2016

Abstract: China has set stringent fuel consumption rate (FCR) targets to address the serious environmental and energy security problems caused by vehicles. Estimating the technological progress and tradeoffs between FCR and vehicle attributes is important for assessing the viability of meeting future targets. In this paper, we explored the relationship between vehicle FCR and other attributes using a regression model with data from 2009–2016. We also quantified the difference in the tradeoff between local and joint vent… Show more

“…According to the Development Trend of Average Fuel Consumption of Conventional Energy Passenger Cars in China, the average decrease from 2013 to 2018 was 2.08% [15]. If the impact of curb weight and power of various vehicles on the potential of energy saving is not taken into account, the average annual reduction in the FC of conventional energy vehicles can reach 2.9% under optimistic conditions [20]. Based on the above factors, when calculating the development trend of fuel consumption of the conventional energy vehicles, the paper sets three scenarios of annual reduction in the FC of conventional energy vehicles from 2021 to 2023 as 2%, 2.5%, and 3% respectively.…”

“…In recent years, with the increasingly rigorous implementation of safety and fuel economy regulations, advanced steels with higher strength and toughness are demanded by the automotive industry [7]. Vehicle weight and engine power are two of the most important parameters that influence a vehicle's fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, among which the most effective method is to reduce the vehicle weight [8,9]. The use of lightweight components is a fundamental requirement in material engineering.…”

“…The first is using hybrid, battery electric, or fuel cell electric vehicles that are more environmentally friendly and more efficient. The second is to use fuel-saving technologies or to produce smaller and lighter vehicles ( 8 ). Electric and hybrid electric vehicles have not yet become sufficiently widespread because of their low range and high cost.…”
