The systems approach in developmental psychology: fundamental concepts and principles

Abstract: -Developmental Psychology seems to have come to an unifying theoretical framework which may make feasible to overcome the fragmentation so frequently referred to within the discipline. This is indicated by the widespread support being given to the systems approach, enriched by dialectic and contextual postulates. In this article, we briefly review the antecedents of this approach and explore its core concepts, indicating their roots and the precise way in which they are applied to developmental analyses today.… Show more

“…This has implications for research and practice. As it has been recommended in the human development literature (Tinajero & Páramo, 2012), career studies may also explicitly indicate the ecological subsystem(s) they are covering. As for intervention, an ecological perspective can lead to the engagement of influential subsystems in the promotion of children's career development (Lent, 2001;Repetto et al, 2007;Schultheiss, 2005).…”

“…The developmental-contextual metatheory could contribute for an organizing framework of children's career development by crediting its dynamics of change, the child's active role in his/her development, and the child-contexts interactions (Araújo & Taveira, 2009). It could also articulate human and career development literatures, as developmental-contextualism presents a comprehensive view of both career and human development (Tinajero & Páramo, 2012;Vondracek et al, 1986).…”

“…Developed mainly based on general systems theory (Von Bertalanffy, 1967, 1968 and inspired by cybernetic theory (Wiener, 1948), systemic psychology has deep interdisciplinary roots. The origins of systemic thinking and the associated systemic epistemologies have been revised and reported in Latin America literature (Costa, 2010;Gomes, Bolze, Bueno, & Crepaldi, 2014;Melo & Ribeiro, 2016;Tinajero & Páramo, 2012). Systemic thinking is considered an epistemological paradigm (Vasconcellos, 2003(Vasconcellos, , 2004.…”
