The Synthesis of Azaperylene-9,10-dicarboximides

Previously unknown, vertically linked heterocycles comprised of benzofuran and iminocoumarin moieties have been synthesized directly from 1,5-dibenzoyloxyanthraquinone and arylacetonitriles via double Knoevenagel condensation followed by formal HCN elimination. The structural assembly of fully conjugated, electron-rich benzofuran and electron-deficient iminocoumarin is responsible for the strongly polarized nature of these heterocycles which translates into their polarity-sensitive fluorescence.

CoCl (5%) catalyzes cross-couplings of various halogenated naphthyridines with alkyl- and arylmagnesium halides. Also, arylzinc halides undergo smooth cross-couplings with various naphthyridines in the presence of CoCl·2LiCl (5%) and sodium formate (50%), leading to polyfunctional arylated naphthyridines. Two of these arylated naphthyridines are highly fluorescent, with quantum efficiencies reaching 95% and long excited-state lifetimes of up to 12 ns.

Propeller-Shaped Aluminum Complexes with an Azaperylene Core in the Ligands

Tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum(III) (Alq3) and its derivatives, characterized by a propeller-shaped three-dimensionally π-conjugated structure, have been intensively studied in the few past decades on account of their potential utility in optoelectronic applications. Reported herein are the synthesis and properties of π-extended Alq3 complexes that contain an azaperylene core in each ligand. Intramolecular palladium-catalyzed direct C–H arylations or base-promoted arylations were employed to prepare these large Alq3 analogues. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of one of the obtained Al complexes revealed a unique three-dimensional packing structure within the crystal, i.e., a honeycomb packing along the ab-plane and columnar π-stacks along the c-axis. An Alq3 analogue with azaperylene-dicarboximide ligands exhibited deep blue color in solution with an intense absorption band that extended to 780 nm (λmax = 634 nm; ε = 58,000 M−1 cm−1).

Abstract: Abstract:The syntheses of two azaperylene 9,10-dicarboximides are presented. 1-Aza-and 1,6-diazaperylene 9,10-dicarboximides containing a 2,6-diisopropylphenyl substituent at the N-imide position were synthesized in two steps starting from naphthalene and isoquinoline derivatives.
