The Source of Immunoglobulin E in the Fetus at Term

Abstract: A high level of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in cord blood (CB) is well known to be predictive of the development of clinical allergy during early childhood. We have tried to ascertain the source of IgE in cord blood by carrying out a series of measurements of IgE concentrations in arterial and venous CB of newborns and comparing them to IgE concentrations in blood samples from both parents. We found that the concentrations of IgE in arterial and venous CB were almost completely identical in the 131 newborns examine… Show more

“…This conclusion is in accordance with previous observations of a similar signif icant correlation between maternal IgE levels and fetal IgE levels assessed with cord blood obtained by venous puncture [10]. Table 1 shows that, among our maternal population, there were 4% more pregnancies with male fetuses than with female fetuses; the number of previous deliveries, the mean age of the mothers and the gestational age at birth were practically identical for these 2 groups.…”

“…We have previously demon strated a significant positive relationship between IgE lev els in mothers-newborns, fathers-newborns, and fathersmothers [10]. We suggested that the explanation for these findings was most probably the home milieu of the family, together with genetic factors.…”

“…Although admixture with maternal blood may occur [18], it is unlikely to affect the CB-IgE levels. In support of this view, the concentrations of IgE in arterial and venous cord blood were shown to be almost completely identical [19]. In our study, no sample showed IgA levels above 60 mg/1.…”
