“…The parenteral transmission of HEV after blood transfusion has already been documented 194,195 . The prevalence of anti‐HEV‐IgG in Egyptian blood donors ranged from 20.9% to 45.2% 196–198 . Indeed, the detection rate of anti‐HEV‐IgM and HEV RNA was 0.45%–5% 190,199 and 3% 190 among the Egyptian blood donors, respectively (Figure 3b,c).…”

“…This finding suggests that, though low viremia of HEV was present among the Egyptian blood donors, blood transfusion could be a potential source of infection for Egyptians. A recent study was performed on 11,604 blood samples from apparently healthy blood donors in Qena Governorate in Upper Egypt [57]. In this study, higher HEV seroprevalence (28.7%) was reported among HCV and HBV seropositive blood donors [57].…”

“…Previously, most HEV seropositive subjects and HEV-infected patients were either asymptomatic or developed a mild self-limiting course [18,43,53,54]. However, recent studies showed that HEV was the cause of fatal fulminant hepatitis among Egyptians [21,56], with a high prevalence rate among blood donors with other endemic hepatotropic pathogens such as hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) [57]. Taking into consideration the high rate of viral hepatitis and death associated with liver diseases in Egypt, we assume that this pathogen is responsible for several infections and deaths among Egyptians.…”

“…By title and abstract screening, 308 studies were selected and entered the full-text screening. Only 30 studies 3 5 , 8 – 10 , 12 15 , 24 , 26 44 were finally included in our meta-analysis after full-text screening (Fig. 1 ) with 193,621 included participants: 97,597 male and 96,024 female.…”

“…The salience of gender in positioning women at increased risk of exposure to HCV infection has been confirmed by some studies 3 6 , while others support the view that HCV infection appears to be prevalent and progresses more rapidly in males than in females 7 11 . On the other hand, some studies found gender differences are artifactual, with nearly flat rates of HCV infection 12 15 . Also, some studies found a decreased rate of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in females 16 , more progress to hepatic fibrosis in males, and more liability to adverse events of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) in females 17 .…”
