Gender differences in prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection in Egypt: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Egypt is the country with the highest known hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence worldwide. The origin of gender differences in HCV prevalence is not usually well understood. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to review and evaluate the gender differences in HCV infection rates amongst Egyptians. Such data would be important to support prevention and control programs aiming to minimize HCV-related morbidity and mortality. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (WOS) were searched for relevant articles pu… Show more

“…Although the heat map plots showed that age and gender have weak correlations with other features, there is some evidence and studies show that they are important factors related to hepatitis C. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by Muhammad Abdel-Gawad et al [ 24 ] to evaluate and analyze the gender differences in hepatitis C regarding the virus infection rates. They found that the HCV RNA positivity rate is significantly higher in male adults than female.…”

“…In Africa, HCV is a substantial public health problem, with prevalence rates varying greatly throughout the continent, ranging from 1 to 1.6% in some areas to more than 10% in others [33,34]. Tus, to evaluate the efectiveness of DAAs in this local setting, it is crucial to consider the experience of African countries with these treatments [18,32,[34][35][36][37].…”

“…With one of the highest HCV prevalences, Egypt doubled its eforts to achieve HCV control using several DAA regimens [32][33][34][35][36][37][38]. Many clinical trials sought to assess the efcacy and safety of the combination of sofosbuvir/daclatasvir in the country, and the fndings reported the high efectiveness and tolerance of the combination in the treatment of chronic HCV [30,31,36,38,39].…”
