“…Due to developing cognitive abilities, adolescent perceptions of their social world are often self-directed and introspective. Stresses and strains tend to be magnified by adolescents (Compas et al 1993;Timmermans et al 2010). Moreover, adolescents may actually experience more stressful events than children or adults.…”

“…Given that adolescents do not normally have sufficient coping skills to deal with difficult situations, the anger and frustration that stem from adversity often lead to delinquency (Guerra et al 1995;Timmermans et al 2010). Moreover, delinquency may actually help to alleviate the anger caused by stress and strain (Brezina 1996).…”

“…Moreover, risk and protective factors need to be investigated in light of comorbidity, because examining one type of problem in the absence of the other is likely to produce biased or incomplete results (Caron & Rutter, 1991; Liu, Bolland, Dick, Mustanski, & Kertes, 2016). Comorbidity may also indicate shared etiological factors, as well as direct reciprocal influences, between the two types of problems (e.g., Beyers & Loeber, 2003; Lahey, Van Hulle, Singh, Waldman, & Rathouz, 2011;Timmermans, van Lier, & Koot, 2010). However, the current research field lacks a strong methodology to represent comorbidity, let alone investigate its risk and protective factors.…”
