The Role of Serum Trace Elements and Oxidative Stress in Egyptian Breast Cancer Patients

Abstract: Background: Oxidative stress is considered to be involved in the pathophysiology of all cancers. Studies indicated that the levels of oxidative stress markers increased in breast cancer. Trace metals are essential to normal human homeostasis. When present in an abnormal expression, they contribute in many pathological processes. Some trace metals are claimed to be carcinogenic and capable of inducing a toxic effect through the formation of free radicles and acting as cofactors in the oxidative damage of biolog… Show more

“…There were consistent findings from other randomised studies showing that there was an association between practicing mindfulness for 6 weeks (Lengacher et al, 2009;El-Deeb et al, 2016) or 8 weeks (Carlson and Garland, 2005) and improvement in the symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, Tang et al (2015) suggested that future research should focus on the length of the mindfulness interventions; the RCT study assessing the immediate efficacy of mindfulness practices are needed in the psycho-oncology literature.…”

“…Conversely, El-Deeb et al found significantly higher serum zinc in the breast cancer groups as compared to the control group. The reason may be related to the variances in sample size and diet habits of subjects enrolled in both studies [20]. Moreover, the results presented in Table 3 are compatible with those of Pavithra et al, who found a statistically significant elevation in serum copper of patients with breast cancer when compared to controls [21].…”

“…( 1 3 ) Currently, this is the second most common type of cancer affecting women, ( 4 , 5 ) accounting for 60% of the deaths in developed countries. ( 6 ) The incidence rate is increasing globally, for example, in 2008 approximately 1.38 million new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed ( 7 ) and 1.7 million in 2012, ( 8 , 9 ) with estimation of 1.38 to 1.7 million new cases each year, ( 10 , 11 ) which makes this chronic disease a major public health problem.
