Abstract

Intrinsic crystal-field parameters for several trivalent actinides in anhydrous chloridecrystalsare obtained. Their variation alongthe seriesisused toestimate valuesof the spin-correlated crystal-field parameters c k . Differences between these and the corresponding lanthanide parameters are interpreted, Recent years have seen the first successful attempt to extend the one-electron crystalfield parametrisation scheme for lanthanide ions that was developed in the 1950s and 1960s. This extension (Judd 1977a, Newman et a1 1982, Crosswhite and Newman 1984 involves the replacement of the tensor operator C(kl(i) by the expression Cck)(i)(1 + cks, 0 S )
