The Role of Exosomal microRNA in Cancer Drug Resistance

Abstract: Exosomes affect the initiation and progression of cancers. In the tumor microenvironment, not only cancer cells, but also fibroblasts and immunocytes secrete exosomes. Exosomes act as a communicator between cells by transferring different cargos and microRNAs (miRNAs). Drug resistance is one of the critical factors affecting therapeutic effect in the course of cancer treatment. The currently known mechanisms of drug resistance include drug efflux, alterations in drug metabolism, DNA damage repair, alterations … Show more

“…They are secreted by various cell types and can promote intercellular communication by transferring varieties of cargos, such as nucleic acid, proteins, and metabolites. 6,7 MicroRNAs (miRNAs), a family of small non-coding RNA molecules of approximately 19-25 nucleotides in length, are essential cargos delivered by exosomes. 7 We have previously identified miRNAs associated with EGFR-mutant NSCLC, such as miR-21 and miR-134/487b/655 clusters.…”

“…Dysregulation of miRNAs in CAFs and the transfer of exosomal miRNAs between cancer cells and the microenvironment are associated with chemoresistance in multiple cancer types (Tanaka et al, 2015;Qin et al, 2019;Guo et al, 2020). In pancreatic cancer, gemcitabine (GEM) treatment induced resistant CAFs that released exosomes containing SNAI1 and miRNA 164a.…”
