The role of attachment avoidance in extradyadic sex

Abstract: The purposes of the present research were to examine the relationship between attachment and extradyadic sex and to investigate a mediator of this relationship. Study 1 showed that attachment avoidance was positively associated with extradyadic sex, while attachment anxiety was unrelated to it. These results were maintained after controlling for sexual satisfaction, sexual desire, gender, and age. Study 2 replicated the results from Study 1, while also controlling for couple adjustment. “…This unwanted closeness is so deeply rooted in avoidantly-attached individuals that it can even lead them to engage in relationships threatening behaviors. For example, Beaulieu-Pelletier, Frederick, Lecours, and Couture (2011) found that the concerns of avoidantly-attached individuals with their partner's desire for closeness and intimacy fully explained the association between their attachment style and engagement in extradyadic sex.…”

“…Studies have shown that infi delity can have negative effects on the relationship, and may be the most feared and devastating experience of a marriage (Pittman, 1994), which may lead to divorce (Zordan & Strey, 2011). A systematic review of the literature (Scheeren, 2016) suggested a prevalence of infi delity between 1.2% (Beaulieu-Pelletier, Philippe, Lecours, & Couture, 2011) and 89.4% (Zhang, Parish, Huang, & Pan, 2012). In Brazil, the study conducted by Goldenberg (2011), with 1,279 men and women from the urban middle class of Rio de Janeiro, showed that 60% of the men and 47% of the women had been unfaithful.…”

“…Some studies have suggested that there is a link between avoidance attachment and infidelity. For example, Beaulieu-Pelletier, Philippe, Lecours & Couture (2011) found that attachment avoidance increases people's irritation relative to their partner's desire for engagement which, in turn, increases the likelihood of their engaging in extradyadic sex. DeWall et al (2011) showed that people with high levels of dispositional avoidant attachment had more permissive attitudes toward infidelity than did those with low levels of dispositional avoidant attachment.…”
