The Resolution of Helicobacter suis-associated Gastric Lesions after Eradication Therapy

Abstract: A reddish depressed lesion was found in the corpus of the stomach of a 56-year-old man. Gastric biopsy showed no findings of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, including lympho-epithelial lesions. A urea breath test, stool antigen test and serum IgG antibody to Helicobacter pylori test were negative. Magnifying endoscopy using narrow-band-imaging showed no malignant structures. Gastric biopsy specimens were subjected to immunohistochemistry and a polymerase chain reaction, which identified Helicobacte… Show more

“…In the present investigation, we did not use the data from the urea breath test (UBT), which is very sensitive and good for evaluations of the entire stomach. However, for the detection of NHPH both negative and weakly positive UBT results were reported, and it is sometimes difficult to apply UBT results to the detection of NHPH 4‐6 …”

“…We observed from the PCR data that every eradication regimen following the Hp treatment was quite effective. In some cases, clarithromycin was substituted to metronidazole because of the recent use of clarithromycin for the treatment of other diseases 6 . The endoscopic regression of the diseases was sometimes delayed, and this type of delay observed by the endoscopy and pathology in comparison with the bacteriological data is also seen during Hp eradication.…”

“…In the literature, H. suis has been introduced as the most prevalent NHPGH species, colonizing the stomach of dyspeptic patients [13,27]. According to the recent study by Nakagawa et al, H. suis was the main cause of chronic gastritis in individuals without H. pylori infection [28,29]. According to previous studies, these species have a pathogenic potential due to the presence of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (ggt), their immune-suppressing properties, as well as outer membrane vesicles [13,30].…”

“…The bacteria Helicobacter suis has been associated with gastric lesions in pigs and humans (DE BRUYNE et al, 2016;NAKAGAWA et al, 2018;RIMBARA et al, 2020), This leads to a major concern, since according to the data presented in the literature, people in close contact with pigs are exposed to higher risks of infection, suggesting that this animal is a zoonotic agent (JOOSTEN et al, 2013;LOUGHLIN et al, 2019). Helicobacter suis is one of the most prevalent non-H. pylori sp.…”
