The authors evaluated measurement-level, factor-level, item-level, and scale-level revisions to the Gifted Rating Scales–School Form (GRS-S). Measurement-level considerations tested the extent to which treating the Likert-type scale rating as categorical or continuous produced different fit across unidimensional, correlated trait, and bifactor latent factor structures. Item- and scale-level analyses demonstrated that the GRS-S could be reduced from a 72-item assessment on a 9-point rating scale down to a 30-item assessment on a 3-point rating scale. Reliability from the reduced assessment was high (ω > .95). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve comparisons between the original and reduced versions of the GRS-S showed that diagnostic accuracy (i.e., area under the curve) of the scales was comparable when considering cut scores of 120, 125, and 130 on the WISC-IV Full Scale ( Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Child–Fourth Edition) and verbal IQ and the WIAT-III (Wechsler Individual Achievement Test–Third Edition) composite score. The findings suggest that a brief form of the GRS-S can be used as a universal or selective screener for giftedness without sacrificing key psychometric considerations.

A relevância da avaliação das altas habilidades/superdotação (AH/S) pode ser compreendida dentro de uma proposta que busca a valorização dos pontos fortes, aptidões e talentos dos indivíduos, assim como a prevenção de problemas sociais e emocionais decorrentes da ausência de identificação. Nesse sentido, pode-se afirmar sua proximidade com os pressupostos da Psicologia Positiva. Perante a lacuna de instrumentos específicos para avaliação desse fenômeno, a construção de uma escala de triagem de indicadores de AH/S foi iniciada. Dentre os estudos para investigação de suas qualidades psicométricas, o presente estudo apresenta os resultados da análise fatorial confirmatória. As respostas de 216 avaliações, feitas pelos professores de estudantes do 2º ao 9º ano do ensino fundamental, foram analisadas. Índices de ajuste adequados foram encontrados, confirmando um modelo teórico multidimensional, que abrange, na escala, cinco domínios em que a AH/S pode se manifestar: capacidade intelectual geral, habilidades acadêmicas específicas, liderança, criatividade e talento artístico. ABSTRACT-Giftedness Indicators Screening Scale: factorial structure The relevance of the assessment of giftedness can be understood within a proposal that seeks to highlight the strengths, aptitudes and talents of individuals, aiming for the prevention of social and emotional problems resulting from lack of identification. Accordingly, its proximity to the ideas of Positive Psychology can be affirmed. Considering the lack of specific instruments for evaluating this phenomenon, the development of a screening scale of indicators of giftedness was initiated. Among the studies to investigate its psychometric qualities, the present study presents the results of the confirmatory factorial analysis. The data from 216 evaluations, performed by teachers of students of grades 2 to 9 of elementary education, were analyzed. Adequate fit indices were found, confirming a multidimensional theoretical model, composed of five domains in which giftedness can be manifested: general intellectual ability, specific academic abilities, leadership, creativity and artistic talent.

The importance of individualized work with gifted students has been acknowledged in both domestic and international environments, and the process of gifted student identification is a professionally demanding one. The Slovene Concept of Identifying and Working with Gifted Students, which has been internationally cited as an example of good practice, is currently being renewed. Psychologists should simultaneously secure methodologically sound instruments for the teachers to assess giftedness in students, as they are indispensable in identifying the gifted in educational settings. In the present article, we describe the process of translation and adaptation of the Gifted Rating Scales GRS-S (Pfeiffer & Jarosewich, 2003) into Slovene. The scales could be used by teachers and other mentors to assess their students’ potentials and abilities in areas of intellectual and academic ability, creativity, artistic talent, leadership, and motivation. We looked into the psychometric characteristics of the scales, gathered the raters’ comments about them, and conducted a convergent validity analysis with the currently used Scales for the Teacher’s Assessment of Giftedness (OLNAD07). Thirty-six teachers from around Slovenia participated in the study and rated the giftedness of 175 4th grade students. The translated scales exhibit good psychometric characteristics (high internal consistency, criterion validity, factorial structure) and satisfactory convergent validity with OLNAD07. While the participating teachers are in general wary of the present instrument, they feel the proposed GRS-S scales are more suitable for use in the identification process. We thus propose a standardization study to be conducted with a larger sample and we propose the possibility of implementing the scales into the process of working with the gifted in Slovenia.
