According to the latest and best estimates, 10 per cent of the population suffers from major allergic illness while 20 per cent more are affected with minor allergies. Allergy is largely an inherited disease, and an increase in the total number of cases in the future is possible. The introduction of thousands of new foods, drugs, synthetic materials, and consumer goods has multiplied the number of allergic victims, and more people than ever have household pets, which are also major sources of allergens. This review deals with some of the mechanisms involved.
