“…It is identical to the gene of the prolactin-inducible protein (PIP), independently described by Shiu and co-workers (23,32) in the T47D cell line. Murphy et al (22) reported on the expression of this gene in primary human breast carcinomas.…”

“…Much less is known about the expression of pS2 in metastatic breast carcinoma [8][9][10]12], The expression of pS2 in uninvolved breast tissue has been discussed in detail in an earlier communication [4], pS2-mRNA was found more frequently in uninvolved breast tissue of pre menopausal women than in that of postmenopausal wom en [4], While previously no differences in pS2 expression between breast carcinomas from pre-or postmenopausal women could be seen [ 1], in the present series pS2-mRNA was found more often in tumors from premenopausal women: 16 of 23 (70%) of tumors from women aged 50 or 86 Hahnel/Harvey/Robbins/Stcrrctt/Hahnel Hormone-Regulated Genes in Breast Tissue less expressed pS2, while only 30 or 65 (46%) of the older age group contained pS2-mRNA (p = 0.04). PlP-mRNA has been found in primary breast carcino ma with a frequency varying between about 25 [1] and over 60% [6]. In our current series approximately one third of primary breast carcinomas contained PIPmRNA.…”

“…PIP-mRNA is found in a proportion of breast carcinomas, and postmenopaus al patients are twice as likely to have high levels of PIPmRNA in a tumor as are premenopausal patients [ 1 ]. PIPmRNA has not been found previously in normal breast tissues [6].…”
