The prognostic value of histopathological grading systems in oral squamous cell carcinomas

Abstract: A significant association between the BD model and outcome of OSCC patients was observed, indicating this new histopathological grading system as a possible prognostic tool.

“…Our result was consistent with previous studies, which did not find any correlation of POI with LNM and survival . These findings suggest that the prognostic value of invasive pattern remains controversial, possibly attributing that its subjectiveness for this histopathological characteristic is a categorical but not numerical parameter . Interestingly, we also found that type I was associated with reduced survival (Figure S1).…”

“…However, the prognostic value of these parameters remains unresolved with conflicting reports in the literature . Furthermore, a BD model (a combination of tumour budding and invasive depth) has been suggested as a histopathological risk factor for recurrence in early‐stage TSCC and significantly associated with the outcome of OSCC …”

“…IHC was the first method of choice because of its broad applications in clinical practice and ability to provide results for patient postoperative management decisions 28 . In addition, histopathology remains the gold standard to determine the postsurgical treatment prognosis of OSCC patients, based on the evaluation of morphological findings, such as invasion by neoplastic islands and perineural invasion that lead to a worse clinical outcome of the disease 4,10 .…”

“…Outcomes were classified as specific survival (SS) for the disease, the time from the beginning of treatment until death as a result of OSCC or the last follow-up information when the patient was alive, and DFS, the time from the beginning of treatment until diagnosis of the first recurrence (local, regional or distant) or last follow-up information for patients without recurrence. Stained H&E histological slides were evaluated according to four histopathologic classification systems, the WHO classification system 60 , the Malignancy Grading (MG) system 61 , the Histologic Risk (HR) model 11 and the Budding and Depth of invasion (BD) model 4 , and the slides were calibrated by two pathologists 10 .…”

“…En los países en desarrollo no es posible la investigación con los pará-metros más avanzados 7 . Recientemente, mediante análisis univariado se ha reportado una asociación estadísticamente significativa ente el sistema de gradación histológica de la OMS y la supervivencia de pacientes con COCE 8 .…”
