In an increasingly mobile world, transience is becoming the norm. Sustainable community food initiatives, therefore, must organise to withstand high turnover of volunteers. Using a case study of the United Kingdom’s National Union of Students’ food growing scheme in universities, this paper aims to map the causes and effects of short-term, irregular, and low participation using a causal loop diagram to understand how to mitigate their negative impacts and improve participation. Data was gathered through interviews, workshops, photovoice, a fishbowl discussion, and a reflective diary. We found three amplifying feedback loops increasing short-term, irregular and low participation, their causes, and their impacts. These feedback loops were precariously buffered by a continuous in-flow of new potential participants each academic year. We also found that the stakeholders of these gardens conceptualised time akin to both temporary and permanent organisations, and these differing conceptualisations were a source of tension. Furthermore, although ‘organisational amnesia’ was a problem, the gardens were still learningful spaces. We recommend both upstream and downstream solutions are implemented to buffer the impacts of transience and suggest that university and students’ union staff could play a crucial and subtle supporting role.

This study aimed to assess opportunities of local food Suweg/Maek and Porang/Maek Bako as potential economic commodities by providing a systematic understanding of their species distribution, showing their similarities and differences in nutritional content, and analyzing their impact on local economic context. A descriptive analysis was performed while applying small scale laboratory analysis. Direct observation and interview were applied to collect data through a period of survey. A total of 80 respondents (10 respondents of each sub-district) were recruited using snowball sampling technique in South Lamaknen, Lamaknen, Lasiolat, Nanae Dua Besi, Raimanuk, Raihat, West Tasifeto, and East Tasifeto. The primary data were collected by interviewing key respondents and secondary data were obtained from related agencies and records. Data were collected, coded, and tabulated accordingly. Then analyzed in both qualitative and quantitative aspects including plants morphology, Global Positioning System (GPS) analysis and distribution, production analysis (cost analysis, local food consumption patterns). The findings were discussed in terms of their impact as potential commodities. The results show that Maek and Maek Bako have potential economic benefits, good nutritional content for local fresh food and alternatives, and valuable for food planning. It is essential that Belu Government should support their (unused) potential with adequate financial support, technology diffusion, and enhancing public private collaboration to increase the plants productivity.

The technique and technology of movement and displacement of the powder product inside the drum dryer with a paddle agitator have been developed. Theoretical studies were carried out to assess the effect of the system of forces on the product inside the rotating drum when the agitator rotating in the opposite direction is exposed to it, which allowed estimating the throughput capability of the drying unit. It is established that, with an increase in the speed of movement and mixing of the product, the drying speed increases. The results of these studies can be used in the future when designing drying units and improving the drying technology.
