Eligible persons were invited to local examination sites for a complete ophthalmic examination. “…In a previous report, we have described the detailed methodology of YMES, [19][20][21][22] and the prevalence of pterygium in the baseline survey conducted in 2010, in Bai ethnicity. 19 In brief, random cluster sampling strategies were used to select ethnic Bai adults, aged 50 years or older, living in a rural community in the Yunnan Province located in southwest China (eastern longitude 99.589 and northern latitude 25.259).…”
The incidence of pterygium in this rural cohort was higher compared to a previous report in Chinese in urban areas. The findings are important for health policy makers to project future burden of pterygium and make proper decisions on health resource allocation.

“…5 Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) is the most prevalent form of glaucoma in Western countries and in urban areas of China and among ethnic Chinese in urban areas of Singapore, whereas angle-closure glaucoma (ACG) is the most common in mainland China from the results of Cheng's meta-analysis study. [5][6][7][8] The Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) program is a mandatory single-payer health insurance system in which all citizens are obliged to participate. The NHI program was implemented in 1995 and provides almost universal health coverage.…”
In Taiwan, ACG was more prevalent in women and OAG might be more prevalent in men. The prevalence of ACG was higher than that of OAG before 2005, but the prevalence of OAG has been higher than that of ACG since 2005.
“…In our study, the prevalence of glaucoma of 1.8% in this diabetic population was within the range of 1% to 2.7% as found in Chinese subjects. [27][28][29] Therefore, it appears that we did not find any increased prevalence of glaucoma in this diabetic population. We also did not find any evidence that DR is a risk factor for glaucoma.…”

“…[27][28][29] There have been no previous prevalence studies for glaucoma in Hong Kong. This DR screening program has been the first systematic screening for DR in Hong Kong.…”
The overall prevalence of glaucoma in this diabetic population, based on finding increased cupping of optic disc in a teleretinal screening program was 1.8% (95% confidence interval, 1.0-3.0).
