“…Odontogenic cysts and tumours could affect the maxilla and mandible to a great extent, leading to poor mechanical properties associated with perforated cortical bone in the mandible. 4 Posterior side of the mandible is observed to be more vulnerable to cysts and tumours as compared to other parts. 57 However, poor oral hygiene, unhealthy food habits, recurrence of cancers may severely affect the mandibular basal bone and can cause pathological failure.…”

“…The maxilla was not considered in the present study because of its limited bone area that may result in a misleading diagnosis regarding the location of OKCs, that is, if they are located in the posterior or the tooth-bearing area. 1 Studies that met the inclusion criteria or those with doubtful information either in the title or abstract were selected for full-text assessment in a second round of this review. Reasons for rejection of studies were recorded for each report.…”

“…A systematic review on the presentation of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) in the jaws, which included 2376 primary mandibular OKCs not related to the Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (NBCCS), has revealed that the difference in the clinical risk of having keratocysts in the posterior region of the mandible is of 21% (P < 0.02) as compared to the tooth-bearing area of the mandible 1 . In other words, patients have an estimated difference of 21% in the probability to have primary and nonsyndromic OKCs in the posterior region of the mandible.…”
