Biota Neotrop. 8(2): http://www.biotaneotropica. org.br/v8n2/en/abstract?article+bn00708022008.Abstract: This paper describes a case study of the changes in fishing that occurred in a Brazilian coastal community after a 10 year interval (1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002). There was a decrease in the mean amount of fish caught daily (from 14 kg to 11.32 kg) and annually (from 4.2 t to 3.4 t) and in the richness of species caught (from 21 to 17 species); there was also a low similarity in the species composition of the fish landings (Morisita-Horn index Ch = 0.24). These changes suggested a decline in the locally exploited fish populations, which probably caused the discontinuation of commercial artisanal fishing. However, the diversity of fish caught by hook and line and purse-seine fishing was higher in the second period, whereas there was no significant difference in the diversity of fish caught using gillnets. Despite these changes, the CPUE showed no significant alteration and non-intensive fishing is still practiced by a few (6-35) people in the community. Co-management alternatives (fishing regulations, oysterfarms, ecotourism, etc.) are suggested and may be applicable to other coastal communities after appropriate adaptation for each location. Este artigo descreve um estudo de caso sobre as mudanças ocorridas na pesca em uma comunidade da costa brasileira ao longo de 10 anos (1992)(1993)(1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002). Houve um decréscimo das quantidades médias capturadas diariamente (de 14 kg para 11.32 kg) e anualmente (de 4.2 t para 3.4 t) e também na riqueza de espécies (de 21 para 17 espécies). Além disso, a similaridade da composição de espécies presentes nos desembarques pesqueiros entre os dois períodos foi baixa. (Índice de Morisita-Horn Ch = 0.24). Estas mudanças sugerem um declínio das populações de peixes exploradas localmente, o que provavelmente causou o fim da pesca artesanal comercial. Recebido: 19/09/05Aceito: 30/09/05 RESUMO Fortes competições entre o poder econômico e os usos tradicionais dos recursos e do espaço estuarino no Nordeste do Brasil normalmente promovem grandes impactos e resultam em contrastes sociais e conflitos. Neste trabalho nós inventariamos os diferentes tipos de impactos antropogênicos no estuário do rio Timbó, Estado de Pernambuco, usando um modelo de "checklist" para áreas estuarinas. Foram encontradas grandes diferenças entre as duas margens do estuário quanto aos impactos inventariados. Modificações na paisagem (perdas estéticas) invasões, coletas de moluscos e crustáceos, cortes da vegetação de mangue, navegação, plantações extensivas de coco nas proximidades do estuário, agricultura, e trapiches foram os mais importantes. As melhores localidades (índices de qualidade ambiental superiores a 0,70) foram encontradas somente em comunidades tradicionais. A priorização por Pareto mostrou 15 tipos de interferências respondendo por 80% dos problemas na área. Implicações ecológicas e sociais desses usos conflitantes e impactos são discutidas e medidas de remediação sugeridas. The initiating agency, the Centre for Maritime Research (MARE), is an interdisciplinary social-science organisation based in the Netherlands, whose aim is to provide a platform for the development and exchange of scientific knowledge on the use of marine and coastal resources. Its mission is to be a European research centre that is also explicitly concerned with maritime issues in the South. Its activities include the publication of the refereed journal Maritime Studies/MAST and, on a regular basis, the organisation of conferences on maritime and coastal topics.We, the editors, are striving to create a series that addresses topics of contemporary relevance in the wide field of people and the sea. Our intention is to ensure the highest academic standards, through the involvement of specialists in the field and through the instrument of peer review. While allowing for diversity, we also, however, aim for coherence, if only in purpose.Social scientists in the marine and coastal fields are a dispersed bunch. This is certainly true of those in Europe and the South. Our interaction is impeded not only by our geographical spread across departments and universities, but also by language barriers. The series thus aims to make visible, in the language with the greatest global reach, the excellent intellectual work that is being done by scholars on and from the various regions. Our concern is to ensure that scholarly work on coastal issues is disseminated widely, including to lowincome countries, so we aim to keep the price of our publications as low as possible.Coastal zones the world over are facing a range of challenges, and the scholarly debate is currently tending to concentrate on the concerns of management and governance.
