The Potential of Using Indigenous Pesticidal Plants for Insect Pest Control to Small Scale Farmers in Africa

Abstract: Pesticidal plants are scientifically proven for their effectiveness in controlling insect pests. Their activity is enhanced by active compounds contained, which are known for their repellant and antifeedant potentials to the insects. Use of pesticidal plants by local small scale farmers has been a point of concern following information that majority of farmers do not widely use pesticidal plants despite of an indigenous knowledge that they possess. Improvement of the technologies used by local farmers in previ… Show more

“…Different non-crop plants have been reported to attract beneficial insects in crop ecosystems due to ecological relationships between the plant resources and insect biology [12]. The use of pesticidal plants as artificial pesticide replacers has also been reported [22]. The pesticidal plants also provide ecosystem services like pollination and biological pest control in agricultural fields [23].…”

“…Also, lack of storage facilities and inadequate materials needed for preservation of the fruits among others make the situation alarming and eventually lead to artificial fruit scarcity, fruit insecurity and safety in many households most especially outside the season of the fruits. In cases when some of these fruits are preserved, they are done using synthetics or chemicals which are detrimental to health status and environment of consumers (Mkindi et al, 2015;Youmsi 2017;Sergio et al, 2017).…”

“…2 Technological improvements in farming have meant that local farmers have been able to reduce their use of synthetic pesticides, which can have a negative effect on the environment and farmers' health. 3 Recently, several varieties of corn that have high yield potential have been developed, but their resistance to pest of stored product s is not yet known. During the storage period of corn production, damage can be caused by Sitophilus zeamais.…”
