a b s t r a c tFollowing landscape change, species invasions and extinctions may lead to biotic homogenisation, resulting in increased taxonomic and functional similarity between previously distinct biotas. Biotic homogenisation is more likely to occur in landscapes where the matrix contrasts strongly with native vegetation patches. To test this, we examined the distribution of ground-active beetles in a landscape of remnant Eucalyptus open woodland patches where large areas of lower contrast matrix (farmland) are being transformed to high-contrast pine plantations in south-eastern Australia. We sampled beetles from 30 sites including six replicates of five categories; (1) remnants adjacent to farmland, (2) remnants adjacent to plantation, (3) farmland, (4) plantation, and, (5) remnants between pine plantation and farmland. Community composition in the pine matrix was similar to native patches embedded in pine (ANOSIM, Global R = 0.49, P < 0.000), which we suggest is due to biotic homogenisation. Remnant patches with edges of both farmland and pine plantation did not represent an intermediate community composition between patches surrounded by either matrix type, but rather a unique habitat with unique species. Farmland supported the greatest number of individuals (F = 9.049, df = 25, P < 0.000) and species (F = 5.875, df = 25, P = 0.002), even compared to native remnant patches. Our results suggest that matrix transformations can reduce species richness and homogenise within-patch populations. This may increase the risk of species declines in fragmented landscapes where plantations are not only replacing native vegetation patches, but also other matrix types that may better support biodiversity. Our findings are particularly concerning given expanding plantation establishment worldwide.

I. INTRODUCCIÓNLa tesis central de este artículo es que una dificultad para encontrar solución al conflicto entre Argentina y Uruguay, alrededor de la instalación de fábricas de celulosa a orillas del Río Uruguay, se debe a un 'vacío de poder'. Esto se expresa por la inexistencia de actores legítimos definiendo un 'bien común', tanto a nivel nacional, como regional. Por cierto que no es la primera vez que se dan este tipo de enfrentamientos, ni son un patrimonio del Cono Sur, o América Latina en general. Sin embargo, tanto la forma que ha tomado este conflicto (internacional), como algunos de los actores involucrados (movimientos sociales), dan lugar a reflexiones y preguntas en torno a un nuevo tipo de contexto, que requiere un formato distinto de soluciones. Consideramos que un paso en este sentido es el reconocer que estamos ante una nueva realidad en lo que respecta a formas de articulación de la sociedad civil, en formas de interacción entre estado y ciudadano, así como entre naciones y estados. Esto implica el reconocimiento de que los estados-nacionales cada vez tienen más dificultades de, por si solos, resolver las demandas de sus ciudadanos. También implica el buscar soluciones estructurales, que vayan más allá de 'lo nacional', buscando nuevas formas de 'ciudadanía'. Nuestras reflexiones sobre esto se harán a partir de un estudio de los cambios en la interacción entre movimientos sociales y partidos políticos en Uruguay. II. ALGUNOS APUNTES TEÓRICOSEn una publicación anterior a este conflicto, Hochstetler (2003:215) proféticamente señalaba que para los países del MERCOSUR, el problema transfronterizo más obvio es la cantidad de ríos compartidos por los países de la región. ResumoAnálises sobre internacionalização de terras têm partido de duas premissas: a de que a corrida por terras tem a função principal de promover a produção de alimentos, e a de que a falta de informações sobre transações é derivada do fato deg o cadastro mantido pelo governo ser de preenchimento voluntário. Esse trabalho argumenta que não ocorre falta de informações, mas sim um controle de informações que, por lei, devem existir. O texto também questiona se a agropecuária deverá ser a principal finalidade dos investimentos. Para isso, analisa o preço da terra no Brasil, e as condições de acesso e produtividade à luz dos debates sobre land grabbing, e argumenta que as dimensões de usos múltiplos e flexíveis pautam os investimentos por possibilitar maior retorno sobre o capital com menores riscos, o que ocorre no setor de madeira. O Brasil possui a maior produtividade mundial em florestas plantadas, as quais têm observado grande crescimento em todo o mundo. Por terem usos múltiplos e flexíveis, as florestas plantadas devem atrair land grabbing ligado a atuais processos produtivos industriais, e também à nova bioeconomia. AbstractAnalyzes of land grabbing have come from two assumptions: that the run for land acquisition has the main function of promoting food production, and that the lack of official information about purchases from foreigners is due to the voluntary character of the registry maintained by the government. This work argues that there is no lack of information, but rather a control of information that, by law, must exist. The text also questions whether agriculture and cattle-ranching should be the main purpose of investments.
