“…The CSUR fauna are mostly of subantarctic origin, however, tropical or subtropical species being scarce or absent. Nearly 35 species of copepods have been cited for the CSUR (Björnberg 1973). The most abundant species of large copepods are Rhyncalanus nasutus and Calanoides patagoniensis (Arcos 1975, Castro et al 1991 and, of euphausiids, Thysanoessa gregaria and Euphausia lucens, which become even more numerous further south in the fjords region.…”

“…Distribution records for the regions outside of the Southern Ocean are derived from the latest reference given to each species in Appendix 1. There has been no attempt to correct for differences in sampling intensity among these regions, although the south temperate region has been sampled least (only mentioned in reports by Hulsemann, 1968, andBjörnberg, 1973), and the north temperate, subarctic, and Arctic have been sampled the most.…”

“…Only one of the fi ve species, Cornucalanus robustus, occurs throughout the Southern Ocean; recovered it from 37 deepwater stations in the Antarctic and subantarctic regions. Vervoort (1965a) identifi ed fi ve specimens, including two juvenile copepodids in the deep water of the Gulf of Guinea in the tropical Atlantic, and this remained the only record from outside the Southern Ocean until Björnberg (1973) reported it in the southeastern Pacifi c Ocean.…”

“…It is clear that C. acutus has an Antarctic distribution and C. macrocarinatus probably has a subantarctic circumpolar distribution as it has been recorded south of South Africa (Brodsky, 1972;De Decker, 1984) and off New Zealand, (personal observation). It is puzzling that C. macrocarinatus hasn't yet been recorded off South America although Bjornberg (1973) records the occurrence of C. patagoniensis in surface waters close inshore between 30-43°S off the Chilean coast in subantarctic water.…”
