Review of the taxonomy of the Calanidae (Copepoda) and the limits to the genus Calanus

Abstract: Conflicting systems of classifying the Calanidae (Brodsky, 1972;Bradford & Jillett, 1974) are analysed and a preferred system recommended. Brodsky's system, based on characters with assumed adaptive and functional significance is rejected as is his claim to have produced a phylogenetic scheme. Bradford & Jillett's system, based on a variety of characters, results in a coherent classification which aims to be neutral concerning phylogenetic relationships among genera. Species of Calanoides, Calanus, Nannocalanu… Show more

“…All eight genera recognized by Bradford (1988) are represented by species whose morphology is known in great detail, seven of which are the type species of their respective genera [Canthocalanus pauper (Giesbrecht, 1888) Giesbrecht, 1902, Calanus propinquus Brady, 1883) (see Bradford-Grieve 1994). Neocalanus contains two groups (Bradford-Grieve 1994) represented here by Neocalanus gracilis (Dana, 1949) and Neocalanus tonsus (Brady, 1883).…”

“…recognized by classical systematists on the basis of morphological criteria consist of reproductively isolated taxa. As a result, it is increasingly being recognized by zooplankton systematists (Einsle, 1980(Einsle, , 1988Frey, 1982;Bradford, 1988) that it is difficult to delimit species boundaries using morphological criteria alone.…”
