This paper takes the cue from the case of a retracted paper, cited both by the retraction notice and by an article published later in the same journal. This led to analysis and discussion on the skewness of citations in the journal Sustainability and within Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) journals, particularly investigating self‐citations at journal and publisher levels. I analysed articles published by Sustainability in 2015 and found that self‐citations are higher than expected under a uniform probability distribution. Self‐citations in this journal make a 36% difference to the journal's impact factor. This research raises the question of what citation patterns can be expected as normal, and where the boundary between normal and anomaly lies. I suggest the issue deserves further investigation because self‐citations have several implications, ranging from impact factors to visibility and influence of scientific journals.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare Scopus journals published in East Asian countries—China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan—in terms of their open access status and metrics and to explore the implications of those findings for South Korea.Methods: To conduct this study, we selected four East Asian countries: China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. We used journal information provided by SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) and Scopus. The following parameters were analyzed for journals published in East Asian countries: open access status, subject categories, quartiles, number of published documents, h-index, publishers, and citation rate.Results: In all East Asian countries, numerous commercial publishers publish journals. One exception is Science Press, a Chinese government-sponsored publisher, which published the largest number of journals in the East Asian region. Japan had the highest median number of years covered by SJR. However, the proportion of Q1 journals in Japan was the lowest of the East Asian countries. South Korea had the highest proportion of Q1 journals in the country’s total journal production. Publishers in South Korea published more open access journals than any other East Asian country. Despite publishing a high proportion of prestigious journals, South Korea lagged behind China and Japan in the number of Scopus-indexed journals.Conclusion: The findings indicate that South Korea has made significant progress in locally producing influential journals over the years. However, more efforts to publish international journals are required for South Korea to increase the number of Scopus journals.

Publicação em periódicos científicos é crucial para os esforços de internacionalização de pesquisadores e instituições. O objetivo geral deste trabalho é analisar a internacionalização dos periódicos nos quais publicam os autores vinculados a uma universidade classificada entre as dez melhores do Brasil, com base nos seguintes objetivos específicos: a) identificar os idiomas dos artigos; b) descrever a distribuição dos títulos e editoras; e c) identificar o tipo de acesso dos principais títulos. Este estudo bibliométrico e multidimensional coletou dados na WoS e nos websites dos periódicos. Os resultados mostram que o total de publicações em periódicos dobrou entre 2010 e 2019, com destaque para o crescimento das Social Sciences. No geral, 83% dos artigos são publicados em inglês, sendo que nas Physical Sciences o percentual chega a 96%. A maioria dos artigos é publicada em títulos de editoras comerciais, exceto nas áreas de Ciências Sociais e Humanidades, em que prevalecem as universidades. A editora com maior número de artigos e de periódicos é a Elsevier. O título com maior número de artigos no período é o PLOS One, seguido de vários títulos brasileiros em acesso aberto. A conclusão mostra notável diversidade de comportamento entre as áreas do conhecimento, o que aponta a necessidade de definir claramente o que seria internacionalização para cada uma. O predomínio das editoras comerciais em número de artigos e títulos, lideradas pela Elsevier, mostra a evasão dos registros da ciência pagos com recursos públicos “periféricos” para a guarda de empresas ligadas ao oligopólio das publicações da ciência.
