The agroforestry system provides important economic and ecological benefits for local communities, one of which is obtained from the application of planting patterns and plants species in it. This research aims to explain the planting pattern of rubber agroforestry developed by the community in Menggala Mas Village, Lampung Province, Indonesia. The approach in this research is qualitative. Data collection methods included observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The planting patterns of agroforestry system on their rubber plants were analysed. The research results showed that there are three agroforestry planting patterns implemented by the community, namely, alley cropping, trees along border and random mixture. The dominant combinations in alley cropping were rubber/karet (Hevea brasiliensis) – pulai (Alstonia scholaris) and rubber–mentru (Schima wallichii) – kayu afrika (Maesopsis eminii). The dominant combinations in trees along border were rubber–akasia (Acacia auriculiformis), rubber–jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) – cempedak (Artocarpus integer) and rubber–petai (Parkia speciosa) – jati (Tectona grandis). The dominant combinations in the random mixture were rubber–jengkol (Pithecellobium lobatum), rubber–petai–jengkol–akasia, rubber–jackfruit–cempedak, rubber–pulai–mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia L.) – jengkol and rubber–banana (Musa paradisiaca) – gadung (Dioscorea hispida) – sungkai (Peronema canescens Jack). Forty-one plant species were found. The local community wants to develop this planting pattern because the rubber agroforestry planting pattern can provide direct and indirect benefits such as a greater variety of plants which can increase their income; also, the products can be sold or consumed by the family, as a fence, fire break or barrier to other farmers’ land, can provide shade to reduce hot temperatures when farmers are working, and can reduce the risk of flooding and soil erosion to support soil and water conservation within the ‘Omou’ (garden/forest). The government and agricultural extension workers need to carry out regular guidance and outreach programmes regarding rubber agroforestry development strategies to increase public knowledge.

What is the exact area of community forestry (HKm) land that can be effectively managed by farmers? The objectives of the study were 1) to identify HKm land management practices by farmers based on vegetation density and income at various strata of land area, 2) to analyze the effectiveness of HKm land management in various strata of land area, 3) to analyze the factors that influence the effectiveness of land management in various strata. strata of land area The method used in this research is descriptive through a series of observations, interviews and Focus Group Discussions. The number of respondents interviewed was 42 people. The variables studied included environmental aspects such as plant density, economic aspects in the form of production values and effectiveness assessment using scoring techniques, with the decision criteria being very effective, effective, quite effective, less effective and ineffective. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that (1) plant density in various land strata in strata I (<0.25 ha), strata II (0.25-0.5), strata III (>0.5-1ha) and Strata III (>0.5-1ha). IV(> 1 ha) were 382, 387,389 and 378 plants/ha, respectively. Meanwhile, the income of each farmer is (Rp/ha/year): 46,494,744; 25,479,880; 39,704,174 and 31,358,023. From various land strata, the level of effectiveness of the management is categorized as effective for land strata I, III, and IV and quite effective for land strata II. The factor that influences the effectiveness of land management is land area, where there is a tendency that the smaller the land area, the more effective the management. Other factors are the application of agroforestry patterns, other land tenure, availability of labor and age of farmers. Suggestions put forward for land distribution policies should consider the area between 0.5 - 1 ha, because it has provided sufficient income for farmers.

Abstract. Markum, Rahman FA. 2024. Surface runoff in varying forest cover types in Jangkok Watershed, Lombok Island, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 753-761. Forests in the Jangkok Watershed play an important role in controlling ecological functions and hydrological cycles in Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. This research aims to evaluate the amount of surface runoff in the Jangkok Watershed by looking at various types of forest cover, namely Primary Forest (PF), Disturbed Forest (DF), Candlenut Agroforestry (CA), Mahogany Woodlot (MW), Multistrata Agroforestry (MA) and Simple Agroforestry (SA). The research area was located at altitudes between 250-650 meters above sea level with a slope of 7-43%. Data collected on each type of forest cover included: vegetation characteristics, surface runoff, slope and rainfall. The result shows vegetation cover in the studied area varies from moderate to very dense with coverage ranging from 50-90%. The vegetation in PF, DF and MA are characterized by very diverse vegetation, while that in UM, CA and SA it is quite homogeneous. The amount of Surface runoff coefficient varies across forest cover types with PF being the lowest (0.6-1.4%), followed by DF (0.6-1.7%), MA (0.6-1.7%), MW (0.6-2.1%), SA (1.0-2.2%) and CA (1.8-4.3%). Factors that are considered influential in determining the magnitude of surface runoff at the research location are the physical properties of the soil, rainfall intensity, vegetation type, structure and density, and land slope. The findings of this study suggest that more complex vegetation has important role in minimizing surface runoff, highlighting the importance of preserving and protecting this forest type to maintain hydrological function of watershed.
