The Oligocene succession in the eastern North Sea: basin development and depositional systems

Abstract: -The Oligocene sedimentary succession in the eastern North Sea is revised and re-interpreted by applying new state-of-the-art reflection seismic data integrated with new bio-and Sr-stratigraphy data from three key wells in the study area. The Oligocene succession in the eastern North Sea is divided into four transgressive-regressive (T-R) sequences, characterized by non-accretional and/or aggradational transgressive systems tracts and prograding regressive systems tracts. Detailed studies of three wells, inclu… Show more

“…According to Eidvin et al (2013d), it is obvious, from seismic interpretation, that wells 2/2-1, 2/2-2 and 2/3-2 are all situated in a central part of the basin, and the wells contain for the most part finegrained sediments typical of distal deposits (see Figs. 29 & 31;Jarsve et al, 2014). The Vade unit in well 11/10-1 contains much coarser sand and is much thicker than in well 2/2-2.…”

“…Moreover, planktic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossil assemblages are very impoverished in the Oligocene deposits in the NE North Sea basin (e.g. King et al, 2016;Śliwińska et al, 2012) in relation to the Tethys (Coccioni et al, 2018;Sliwińska et al, 2014a, b) or the eastern North Atlantic (e.g. de Kaenel and Villa, 1996;Snyder and Waters, 1985).…”
