Early Oligocene dinocysts as a tool for palaeoenvironment reconstruction and stratigraphical framework – a case study from a North Sea well

Abstract: Abstract. The lower Oligocene (Rupelian) successions are climate record archives of the early icehouse world in the Cenozoic. Even though the number of studies focussing on the generally cold Oligocene is increasing, little is known about climatic variations in the mid-latitudes to high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere. One of the major obstacles is the lack of stratigraphically complete uppermost Eocene to Oligocene successions in these regions. This study focusses on dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) from… Show more

“…semicirculata , Phthanoperidinium amoenum , Phthanoperidinium comatum , Svalbardella cooksoniae , Spiniferites manumii , and Wetzeliella gochtii suggest a Rupelian age (Egger et al, 2016; Heilmann‐Clausen & Van Simaeys, 2005; Lund, 2002; Manum et al, 1989; Schiøler, 2005; Śliwińska et al, 2012; Van Simaeys, De Man, Vandenberghe, Brinkhuis, & Steurbaut, 2004; Van Simaeys et al, 2005). The dinocyst assemblage recovered in this interval is similar to the assemblage from the middle Rupelian succession recovered from the central North Sea Basin, the 11/10‐1 well (Śliwińska, 2019).…”

“…Dinocyst taxonomy is according to that cited in Fensome et al (2019). Dinocyst morphology follows the plates provided in Heilmann-Clausen and Van Simaeys (2005), Sliwinska (2019), Stover and Hardenbol (1994), and Van Simaeys et al, (2004). One microscope slide per sample was counted until at least 200 palynomorphs (spores, pollen and dinoflagellate cysts) were identified.…”

“…This could potentially be improved by a detailed analysis of dinocysts (e.g. Śliwińska et al, 2010;Śliwińska, 2019;Śliwińska and Heilmann-Clausen, 2011), but it is outside the scope of the present study. Notably, at the older SST minimum (depth ca.…”
