The occurrence and distribution of potato cyst nematodes in Croatia

Abstract: Potato cyst nematodes (PCN) Globodera rostochiensis (Wollenweber, 1923) Behrens, 1975 and Globodera pallida (Stone, 1973) Behrens, 1975 are the most troublesome pests of potatoes worldwide. Since 1968 there have been no investigations of the presence of PCN in ware potato lands in Croatia although these pests were recognised as an A1 plant-health quarantine species. After the Wrst discovery of G. rostochiensis in the locality of Belica (Medjimurska County) in 2001, intensive monitoring of the distribution of … Show more

“…In this regard, only G. pallida or G. rostochiensis alone isolates in different regions (Algiers, Boumerdes, Blida, Tipaza, Béchar and El Oued) were identified by [ 19 ]. Similar investigations carried out in various other countries have shown the presence of alone isolates and mixed isolates of the PCN species [ 13 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 ], which corroborates with these results. In addition, according to [ 48 ], G. pallida and G. rostochiensis rarely occurred as separate species, but more often as a mixture species in the same field.…”

“…Dates and localities of PCN detections globally were collated from published and unpublished official records (4,10,16,28,38,41,50) (E. M. Matveeva, unpublished). Only data from commercial potato fields were used (with the exception of New Zealand).…”

“…However, to our knowledge the effects of varying sample sizes on the efficiency of cyst extraction by either technique have not been documented. An understanding of the relationship between sample size and extraction efficiency is vital because the new Directive will be adopted by member states that use different extraction methods and different extraction equipment that can vary in sample size capacity and extraction efficiency (Caswell et al ., 1985; Turner, 1998; Grubišić et al ., 2007). Therefore, we examine the effects of sample size on extraction efficiency at high and low cyst densities for two widely used extraction techniques: the Fenwick can and Schuiling centrifuge.…”
