The need for research that is designed to support decisions in the delivery of mental health services.

Abstract: (1995) argued that traditional approaches to mental health services research fail to provide useful information to consumers and practitioners, particularly in an environment increasingly dominated by managed care. The authors recommend 4 guidelines for designing a research program so that the results can support the decisions of the major stakeholders (clients-families, practitioners, service managers, and policymakers): (a) Research must be targeted and programmatic and encompass a strategy of complementary … Show more

“…Goldfried and Wolfe (1996) have pointed out the trade-off inherent in this choice, increasing generalizability but decreasing interpretability. Other authors, such as Barlow (1996), Howard, Moras, Brill, Martinovich, and Lutz (1996), and Newman and Tejeda (1996), advocate that effectiveness studies be conducted to add to the findings obtained in the more interpretable, but less "real-world" applicable, efficacy studies already designed. Clarke (1995) specifically suggests that heterogeneous groups of patients be used in effectiveness studies to provide information that may address the needs of patients seen in community-based clinical settings.…”

“…Thus, the focus is on issues of context, therapist and client characteristics and how these variables mediate and moderate outcomes within a service setting. There have been calls for this form of research to more directly inform mental health decision making (for example, Newman & Tejeda, 1996).…”
