The nature and role of informal resilience practices in the performance of lean production systems

Abstract: PurposeResilience in lean production systems (LPSs) relies on both formal and informal practices. Considering that these latter are relatively less explored, this paper describes the nature and role of informal resilience practices in the performance of LPSs.Design/methodology/approachA survey was devised to assess the use of 12 informal practices related to resilience. The survey was answered by 206 respondents from high and low lean adopters in Brazil, focusing on their internal operations. Multiple linear r… Show more

“…Recommendations for future applications include a broader and longer-term implementation of Lean strategies across various laboratory operations to address increasing workloads and economic challenges within the healthcare sector. The study's findings advocate for a systemic adoption of Lean philosophies to foster a culture of continuous improvement and waste minimization, ultimately leading to more responsive and sustainable laboratory services (2,10,19).…”

“…In reflecting on the study's strengths, it is evident that the Lean approach significantly improved laboratory efficiency and costeffectiveness, maintaining or enhancing quality standards. However, the study also faced constraints inherent in the healthcare environment's unpredictability and variability in patient needs (4,7,10,17,22). Recommendations for future applications include a broader and longer-term implementation of Lean strategies across various laboratory operations to address increasing workloads and economic challenges within the healthcare sector.…”

“…On the other hand, the Industry sample presented a mean score of 2.9 in the dimension 'Use of Structured Methods' (in 'Ability to Respond'). This suggests that most responses come from informal resilience, that is, the ability of a system to develop resilience through the emergent outcome of non-designed interactions (Gayer et al, 2022). Although informal resilience may perform well as a first-order response, in the long term, the adoption of structured methods is advised.…”

“…In the past two decades many models have been developed to handle production disturbances; e.g., [6] presents and compares almost sixty of them all dedicated to handling external (supply chain) disruptions. Researchers and practitioners are in common that human operators (or first-line managers) have a vital role in handling deviations: in anticipating, monitoring, responding, delegating and learning [7,8]. They are the most flexible integrators just when unexpected events need to be handled [9,10].…”
