Nemrut Crater lake is the world's second largest and largest of Turkey crater lake and its altitude is 2250 m. The aim of this study is to determine radioactivity levels of the lake surface water. In this study water samples were collected from 33 points of the lake surface. The gross alpha and gross beta activity concentrations were determined by using ultra low level α/β counter. The mean gross alpha and beta activity concentrations were found to be 77.69 mBqL −1 and 115.36 mBqL −1 respectively. Contour maps were produced for gross alpha and beta concentrations of the lake.

Measurement of the gross alpha and beta activity concentrations in various matrices is suitable as a preliminary screening procedure to determine whether further analysis related to specific radionuclide is necessary. In Serbia, according to current regulations, radioactivity concentrations in drinking water for gross alpha and gross beta should be < 0.5 and < 1.0 Bq L −1 , respectively. The generally accepted methods for gross alpha and beta activity analysis of drinking water in different countries are: EPA 900.0 and ISO methods (ISO 9696, water quality -measurement of gross alpha activity in non-saline water -thick source method, and ISO 9697, water quality -measurement of gross beta activity in non-saline water). This paper describes comparison of preparations and measurement gross alpha and beta activity in bottled mineral waters as well as in tap waters in Serbia using two methods: EPA 900.0 with and without ash, and ISO methods. Concentration of total dissolved solids (TDS) in investigated water samples was determined. Based on obtained TDS, certain volume was evaporated. The instrumentation used to count the gross alpha and gross beta activities for both methods is α/β low level proportional counter Thermo Eberline FHT 770 T.

Gold mining in South Africa has occurred for over 100 years in the Witwatersrand goldfields. The associated geology contains 3% pyrite (FeS 2 ) together with radioactive elements such as uranium and thorium. Mining of gold in the Witwatersrand basin leaves FeS 2 exposed to H 2 O and O 2 in mine tailing and mine voids. This resulted in the formation acid mine drainage (AMD) due to the oxidation of FeS 2 in the presence of H 2 O and O 2 . The acidity generated from FeS 2 caused chemical weathering of the surrounding tailings or bedrock. The mine water from the mine voids and mine tailings in the basin is acidic and contains elevated concentration of radioactive elements such as U, Th, Ra and Pb in addition to heavy metals such as Fe, Al, Mn, Ca and Mg. The radioactivity of the mine water determination using alpha and beta spectrometry indicated that mine water from the gold mine had alpha and beta radioactivity 6 and 12 times greater than the target quality water range (TQWR) for potable water respectively.
