The Multifunctionality and Territoriality of Peri-Urban Agri-Food Systems: The Metropolitan Region of Madrid, Spain

Abstract: This paper addresses the Multifunctional and Territorialised Agri-Food Systems (MTLAFS) in areas of direct urban influence, focusing on the metropolitan region of Madrid. MTLAFS are contextualised as alternatives to the hegemonic global model of mass production and consumption. They are created by combining two conceptual and theoretical bodies of knowledge that share many elements: the study of Local Agri-Food Systems (LAFS), a critical approach to agri-food economies and the re-territorialisation of agri-foo… Show more

“…As such, it makes sense to ensure this landscape remains productive, the true driver of its management, and that by maintaining these activities, the distinguishing features and patrimony are preserved, as well as its environmental value. The proximity to a great metropolis, like Madrid, can be the key to not only fulfil this weekend role, but also to constitute a Territorialized Agroalimentary System, as proposed elsewhere [74]. Of course, all these considerations should be shared by all the territorial actors that make up and contribute to this landscape [68,101].…”

“…The elements of the landscapes with cultural value were identified and classified based on fieldwork and previous studies [16,74]. The types of enclosure (dry stone wall, dry stone wall with arboreal vegetation, and dry stone wall covered by multiple strata of vegetation), the types of access (traditional gates, access through gates made with artificial materials, and modern gates that preserve the traditional forms), and the elements of patrimonial nature and identity in the landscape were analyzed.…”

“…Rochefort et al (2021) reviewed the impact of territorialized food systems on health, food security, and the environment. The multifunctionality and territoriality of peri-urban areas have been analyzed to identify the factors needed to re-territorialize food systems and improve their socioecological resilience (López-Estébanez et al, 2022). Territorial studies can facilitate policy design considering all four food security dimensions: availability, access, utilization, and stability.…”

“…Food systems also differ with regard to structure, governance, and supply chains. The recognition of these unique features that characterize different food systems is important, and there have been recommendations to consider territorialized studies in the analysis of food systems (Gasselin et al., 2020; López‐Estébanez et al., 2022).…”

“…Estos sistemas productivos generan resultados en tres ámbitos: la seguridad alimentaria y nutricional (SAN), el socioeconómico y político, y el medioambiental (Roosendaal et al, 2021;González et al, 2022;López-Estébanez et al, 2022). De tal forma que dichos sistemas constituyen el mayor sistema económico del mundo en términos de empleo, medios de vida e impacto global, pues se calcula que proporciona empleo a 4.000 millones de personas a nivel mundial, directa e indirectamente.…”
