Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have attracted much interest from educational researchers and practitioners around the world. There has been an increase in empirical studies about MOOCs in recent years, most of which used questionnaire surveys and quantitative methods to collect and analyze data. This study explored the research topics and paradigms of questionnaire-based quantitative research on MOOCs by reviewing 126 articles available in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) databases from January 2015 to August 2020. This comprehensive overview showed that: (a) the top three MOOC research topics were the factors influencing learners’ performance, dropout rates and continuance intention to use MOOCs, and assessing MOOCs; (b) for these three topics, many studies designed questionnaires by adding new factors or adjustments to extant theoretical models or survey instruments; and (c) most researchers used descriptive statistics to analyze data, followed by the structural equation model, and reliability and validity analysis. This study elaborated on the relationship of research topics and key factors in the research models by building factors-goals (F-G) graphs. Finally, we proposed some directions and recommendations for future research on MOOCs.

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have garnered a lot of attention and interest from academia and industry. The proliferation of MOOC platforms has opened up immense opportunities for fulfilling learner needs and improving the education landscape. It is important to understand the drivers of MOOC adoption to ensure its complete utilization. Research on MOOC adoption, acceptance, usage, and continuance has increased over a period of time. With this regard, the purpose of this study was to review and synthesize the research on MOOC adoption using a structured and domain-based approach in order to understand its state-of-the-art literature. Seventy empirical articles indexed in Scopus or Web of Science were identified and reviewed systematically using the Theories, Context, Characteristics, and Methods (TCCM) framework. Systematic mapping of studies was taken place to determine the year-wise publications, journal quality, citations, widely used theories, the context in terms of MOOC platforms and country of research, characteristics in terms of widely used constructs, and hypothesized relationships. The systematic literature review highlights Technology Acceptance Model is the dominant model applied in the MOOC adoption research. Further research on MOOC adoption is seen majorly in Asian economies with a narrow focus on developed economies. Although several review studies have taken place on MOOC, their focus has been on the quality, pedagogical or user perspective. This study is the first effort in synthesizing the state-of-the-art literature on MOOC adoption. Future avenues of research are suggested in terms of Theories, Context, Characteristics, and Methods to further the theoretical and practical knowledge on MOOC adoption.

Introduction. Cloud computing is a new model of computing based on network technology where computer-related technologies are provided as services that are permanently available for use. This technology saves faculty members’ time, and increases their interaction and communication with colleagues and students. Moreover, cloud computing solutions help faculty members finish and follow up all the required courses, in addition to allowing the faculty members to store and retrieve information comprehensively and immediately. As a result, using cloud computing provides practical, interactive solutions to deal with the academic tasks which a faculty member needs to perform his/her current academic work.Aim. The current study aimed to uncover the reality of using cloud computing to develop the teaching competencies.Methodology and research methods. The study relied on applying the survey method based on a descriptive approach using two types of questionnaire as the main tools for data collection. The sample of the study includes 48 faculty members and 103 students from the College of Education at Jouf University.Results and scientific novelty. The results showed that self-assessment of using cloud computing to develop self-learning teaching competencies among faculty members is of a high level, while the teaching competencies for the application of cloud computing in self-directed learning among faculty members are of an average level according to their students. The results also demonstrated no significant relationship between these two main types of assessment.Practical significance. The current study is significant in light of the fact that it facilitates to understand the impact of utilising cloud computing to accomplish proficient and educational abilities for faculty members at Jouf University.
