The Moderating Effect of Athletes’ Personal Values on the Relationship between Coaches’ Leadership Behaviors and the Personal and Social Skills of Young Basketball Players

Abstract: Transformational coaching has been shown to increase the personal and social skills of adolescent athletes. Nevertheless, the latter’s dispositional characteristics, such us personal values, could have a moderating effect on this relationship. The main objective of this work was to examine perceptions of coaches’ transformational behaviors and the modulation of athletes’ personal values in their relationship with personal and social skills development. Adolescents (n = 309) of both genders (81.9% male) aged 13… Show more

“…Even though the results show excellent achievements in understanding HOTS, it is still important for educators to continue to develop and encourage students to think critically, creatively, and analytically (Corti, Raimundi, Celsi, Alvarez, & Castillo, 2023). Increasing HOTS abilities can help students become more independent learners and more critical thinkers in facing the complexity of today's world.…”

“…Among the dispositional variables that may have a role in the association between sport participation and alcohol consumption, the athletes' personal values could have explanatory potential, as values influence how people perceive, feel, and behave [12]. Consideration of the individual characteristics of adolescent athletes, such as their personal values, may be the key to enhancing positive youth development through sport [13,14], thus preventing the use of alcohol at an early age. A major reason for studying values is based on the hypothesis that they have a significant impact on behavior and have explanatory and predictive potential [12].…”

“…Sports have been considered a good scenario to transmit personal values [13]. The scientific literature suggests that self-transcendence values are related to different desirable outcomes in sports, such as coaches' transformational behavior [18], athletes' intrinsic motivation [20], prosocial attitudes [13], and their personal and social skills [14]. On the contrary, self-enhancement values are positively associated with extrinsic motivation and amotivation in sports [20], antisocial attitudes [13], and antisocial behavior [21].…”

“…Our study considers the Korean community and, within that context, looks at sports coaches, their competencies, and the components of those competencies. The role of a sports coach is considered crucial, whether for amateur sports participants [1][2][3] or elite athletes [4][5][6], as it significantly influences the quality of participation for amateurs and the performance level of elites. Furthermore, the expectations regarding what a sports coach should do and how they should do it have undergone changes over time, driven by societal, economic, political, industrial, and cultural factors.…”
