The locations of seaports and manufacturing activities in Japan have changed considerably since World War II. Despite the geographic spread of economic activities over decades and the uneven development of ports, the cores of both systems have long remained in the same metropolitan areas. While co-location does not provide necessary or causal connection, strong a priori grounds can be offered to posit that a necessary relationship exists between the Japanese manufacturing system's geographic expansion and changes in the maritime transport network. A case study of automobile industry's recent development in the peripheral region of Kyushu identifies some drivers of these evolutions at the level of one particular sector. This suggests that, despite the development of high capacity transport infrastructure and manufacturing facilities in the Japanese periphery, the current manufacturing core is not yet threatened

Just-In-Time System and Its Impact on Operational Excellence: An Empirical Study on Jordanian Industrial Companies

Nowadays, the field of just in time and operational excellence are considered a backbone and a critical pillar for many companies in order to achieve the competitive advantages. Consequently, the main aim of this study is to define the impact of just in time system on operational excellence in the (14) manufacturing companies operating at Al -Hussein bin Abdullah II qualified industrial zone (QIZ) in Al-Karak Governorate. The sampling unit and analysis (respondents) included (168) manager and head of divisions at the production and logistic departments, and selected purposely according to their work especially in the just in time system area within the target companies. Thus, the researcher designed a questionnaire including of (25) items to gather the desired data from study sample. This study also used the multiple regression analysis to test the hypotheses. The result of the current study found that the just in time system have a positive impact on the operational excellence in Jordanian industrial companies. According to these results the study recommending that the Jordanian industrial companies must emphasis essentially and mainly on their just in time system consisted of (equipment layout, supplier's quality, Setup time reduction; Pull production) in order to enhance and attain the operational excellence and gain competitive advantage. One of the most limitations is that the current study and its finding applied on the Jordanian industrial companies especially at Al-Karak governorate. Therefore, the results of present study can't generalize on the other sectors. Therefore, there is a need to conduct more studies and research on the other sectors such as food Industry and pharmaceutical industries in order to generalize the results. In addition to, conducting comparative studies with other industrial areas located in Jordan.

A Review of Recent Transportation Geography in Japan

The purposes of this study are to summarize the achievements of recent transportation geography in Japan since 1990s and to reconsider the changing trends based on socioeconomic changes in Japan. Additionally, issues which should be addressed by transportation geographers are reviewed. Most recent studies of transportation geography have concerned automobile transportation and regional public transportation. Many studies on automobile transportation have been found in Japanese transportation geography: diffusion of motorization and its effect on regional structure until the mid-1990s, and the effect of transportation infrastructure, including highways, until the mid-2000s. Meanwhile, micro-scale studies on regional public transportation have increased since the early 2000s. In other words, the interest of Japanese transportation geography has shifted from the positive effects of transportation to the issues confronting regional public transportation. The following can be pointed out as factors of the change: drastic socioeconomic changes since the 1990s such as a protracted recession, an easing of regulations, and an aging society. Transportation geographers are needed to address the following issues. The first is the construction and operation of flexible types of transportation, such as DRT (Demand Responsive Transportation), to correspond to regional characteristics from a short-term standpoint. The second issue is improvements in the regional structure, including spatial distribution of the population and essential facilities from a long-term standpoint. An approach from a transportation geography perspective is important for resolving the issues on public transportation with consideration of regional characteristics.
