The current tendency to undertake more trips, but of shorter duration, throughout the year, has meant that the tourist industry has started to show greater interest in attracting those market segments that opt for more prolonged stays, as they are especially profitable. One of these segments is that of seniors.Given the aging demographic of the population worldwide, which is particularly noticeable in Spain, the object of this study is to identify the variables that determine the length of stay of Spanish seniors at their destination. The determinant factors of the length of stay by Spanish seniors identified were: age, travel purpose, climate, type of accommodation, group size, trip type and the activities carried out at the destination. This study is a contribution to this field from an empirical point of view, given the scarcity of studies of this type and their eminently descriptive character; as well as from a practical level, with interesting implications for the sector.

Resumo: Em todo o mundo a duração média das viagens tem diminuído. No entanto, curiosamente, essa tendência não tem se revelado no turismo receptivo internacional do Brasil. Duas hipóteses podem explicar a incomum realidade brasileira: mudanças no comportamento dos turistas que visitam o país, e alterações na composição do fluxo turístico receptivo internacional brasileiro. Uma eventual confirmação da primeira hipótese mostraria que a evolução do comportamento dos turistas nos últimos anos foi efetivamente diferente no Brasil e nos demais países, evidenciando a ocorrência de melhorias na qualidade da experiência turística ofertada pelo Brasil. Este estudo objetiva testar essa hipótese através do uso de modelos de duração baseados em mais de 211 mil entrevistas. A modelagem do comportamento individual dos turistas torna possível controlar o efeito de variáveis intervenientes, permitindo uma avaliação detalhada do efeito temporal sobre a duração esperada das estadas dos turistas. Treze modelos de duração são testados. O modelo com melhor ajuste aos dados tem taxa de risco com distribuição Weibull e heterogeneidade individual com distribuição Gama. Os resultados apontam que a tendência crescente da permanência média é parcialmente explicada por uma mudança no comportamento dos turistas. In this paper, we estimate price and income semi-elasticities of the length of stay at different destinations in Italy using the 'Multipurpose survey on tourism demand, holidays and trips' provided by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT). We derive the conditional demand function for the length of stay, which depends on tourists' socio-demographic characteristics, travel characteristics, income and price of touristic services. Since income was not reported in our database, we use the propensity score matching to retrieve this information from the 'Survey on household income and wealth (SHIW)', and we use quantile regression to account for the multimodality of the length of stay.
