The early Holocene archaeological record in Northwest Santa Cruz province in southern Argentina is remarkable in its richness. Among the lithic remains, most notable is a stemless triangular projectile point dating to ~8.5 -10 uncalibrated kya. As part of a long term program directed to explore and understand diverse aspects of lithic technologies from Patagonia, this paper reports new observations on a set of notable unifacial tools existing in the assemblage accompanying them. Based on archaeological and experimental data we hypothesize they were produced from thick flake-blanks with one face totally or partially covered by flake scars sometimes reaching the longitudinal symmetry axis. This fact suggests that before being finished, it was reduced by detaching flakes from the edge to its center. This recent technological discovery allowed deepened on a new regional issue related with early Holocene unifacial tools that emerge as a peculiar style of covering unifacial flaking with subtle production differences to other similar implements. Together with the triangular points, this particular way of preforming the tool before and/or during the final shaping might be another distinctive manufacturing technique used by early Holocene hunter-gatherers in the area.

Abstract:Being a territory with several minerals and rocks suitable for knapping and grinding, Uruguay offered a lithic-rich environment for past indigenous cultures in the Southern Cone of South America. In this paper, a history of lithic procurement studies in Uruguay is presented. Three main periods are discriminated, paying attention to authors' theoretical and methodological contributions to the field. Firstly, a period with general mention to raw materials utilised by indigenous groups, including those historically known, is recognised at least since the last decades of the nineteenth century. Secondly, a period involving description of lithic resources available at a national scale as well as the first detailed observations of lithic sources and possible means of procurement can be distinguished between the 1950s and the mid-1980s. Lastly, beginning with salvage archaeology in the eastern region, the current period of research (i.e. the last thirty years) is characterised by contextualising lithic procurement within issues of lithic technological organisation and settlement patterns of indigenous groups. The current period of studies has involved two different approaches: 1) technological analysis of lithic artefacts and comparison of raw material with previously-published geological data; 2) utilisation of field survey data that locate and map lithic resources, and characterisation of visual (macroscopic, microscopic, or both macroscopic and microscopic) and geochemical components of these resources. Within the latter, studies can be further arranged according to the main temporal framework used to contextualise research problems. On the one hand, questions involving lithic procurement of early hunter-gatherers (who arrived ca. 12,000 BP) since the end of the 1990s have included surveys of potential and utilised sources, the first thin-section-based petrographic studies and the distinction of different local, regional and long-distance procurement strategies. On the other hand, cultural changes since the Middle Holocene have framed lithic source survey studies to answer questions of resource accessibility for coastal groups during sea level changes, as well as for other now-diverse groups such as the lowland moundbuilders. Finally, considerations for future research are made by reconsidering recent developments alongside the history of lithic procurement studies in Uruguay.

RESUMOApresentamos os primeiros resultados de pesquisas em sítios cerâmicos a céu aberto na região de Monte Alegre (PA), área previamente conhecida pela arte rupestre e pelos registros antigos de ocupação humana. Com uma abordagem regional, investigam-se agora os sítios cerâmicos a céu aberto de um período mais recente, a partir do século XIII. A análise cerâmica mostra que, apesar da proximidade de Santarém, os materiais de Monte Alegre apresentam características próprias, definidas pela escolha e combinação de alguns elementos estilísticos presentes nos repertórios de cerâmicas de áreas vizinhas e de outras com ampla dispersão regional. Ao final, discute-se a natureza fragmentária dos estilos cerâmicos e como estes podem resultar de processos de fluxo estilístico propiciados por extensas "redes de relações". Palavras-chave: cerâmica, fluxo estilístico, baixo Amazonas ABSTRACTWe present the initial results of archaeological research in open air sites from the Monte Alegre region, previously known for the rock art sites and records of early human occupation. Within a regional approach, we now aim at investigating the diversity of archaeological records in the area, including late precolonial open air sites starting at XIIIth century. The ceramic data indicates that, despite the proximity of Santarém, Monte Alegre materials display local characteristics, herein defined by the selection and combination of some elements from ceramic repertoires of nearby areas and from others with extensive regional distribution. Finally we discuss the fragmentary nature of style and how they can emerge out of processes of stylistic flow favored by extended social networks.
