Within a regional approach, we now aim at investigating the diversity of archaeological records in the area, including late precolonial open air sites starting at XIIIth century. The ceramic data indicates that, despite the proximity of Santarém, Monte Alegre materials display local characteristics, herein defined by the selection and combination of some elements from ceramic repertoires of nearby areas and from others with extensive regional distribution. Finally we discuss the fragmentary nature of style and how they can emerge out of processes of stylistic flow favored by extended social networks.
