Permanent repository link AbstractThe aims of the current study were to examine the effect of fathers' and mothers' pre and postnatal mental health on mother-infant and father-infant interactions. Mental health was broadly defined to include anxiety, depression and PTSD. A community sample of 44 mothers and 40 fathers from 45 families completed questionnaire measures of mental health in late pregnancy and three months postpartum. Mother-infant and father-infant interactions were observed and videoed three months postpartum and analysed using the CARE-index.Results showed that prenatal mental health, in particular anxiety, was associated with parentinfant interactions to a greater extent than postnatal mental health. Fathers' prenatal symptoms were associated with higher paternal unresponsiveness and infant passivity whilst fathers' postnatal symptoms were associated with higher levels of infant difficulty in the father-baby interaction. The results also indicated that mothers and fathers interaction with their babies were similar, both on average and within the couples, with 34% being inept or at risk. These findings highlight the need for early detection and prevention of both mental health and parent-infant relationship problems in fathers as well as mothers. However, further prospective and longitudinal studies are needed to understand the influences of parental mental health on the parent-infant interactions further. Also it should be noted that the mental health scores were low in this well-educated, middle-class relatively low risk community sample of two-parent families, and that future studies therefore would benefit from focusing on more vulnerable groups of parents.

ResumoA inteligência é um dos conceitos mais estudados e simultaneamente mais controversos na área da investigação em psicologia, mantendo uma importância destacada no âmbito escolar pela associação aos processos básicos da cognição e da aprendizagem, e, por esta via, ao sucesso escolar dos alunos. Baseado numa pesquisa e reflexão atual sobre o estado da arte do tema, este artigo tem como objetivo contribuir para a discussão em torno de três eixos temáticos: (i) conceito e estrutura da inteligência; (ii) sua relação com variáveis sociofamiliares, assumindo neste caso a inteligência como dimensão psicológica moldada pelas variáveis contextuais do desenvolvimento psicossocial dos indivíduos; e (iii) seu impacto na aprendizagem e no rendimento académico de crianças e adolescentes. Defendendo-se que a inteligência é variável imprescindível à aprendizagem, mesmo que não suficiente, este artigo termina, numa lógica otimista, apontando algumas formas de rentabilização e promoção das habilidades cognitivas dos alunos por parte do sistema educativo.Palavras-chave: inteligência, aprendizagem, background sociofamiliar, sucesso académico Abstract Intelligence is one of the most studied concepts in the field of research in psychology, but still one of the most controversial. Its importance in school relies in its association to the basic processes of cognition and learning, and, therefore, in the academic success of students. Based on research and reflection on this theme, this article aims to contribute to the discussion around three axes: (i) concept and structure of intelligence; (ii) its relationship with social-familial variables, assuming in this case the intelligence as a psychological dimension shaped by contextual variables of psychosocial development of individuals; and (iii) impact on learning and academic performance of children and adolescents. Arguing that intelligence is an essential variable to learning, even if not only, this article aims to expose some forms of profitability and promotion of cognitive skills of the students by the education system.

A sensibilidade materna no decorrer de interações mãe-criança está associada a um melhor desenvolvimento cognitivo das crianças em idade pré-escolar. Porém, o papel da sensibilidade paterna encontra-se menos explorado. Setenta crianças (39 do sexo masculino, 55.7%) foram observadas aos 4½ anos de idade, em sessões independentes com a mãe e com o pai, numa interação de jogo livre. Embora não tenha sido encontrada diferença entre sensibilidade materna e paterna durante as interações, apenas a primeira se revelou um preditor significativo de melhor desenvolvimento cognitivo das crianças em idade pré-escolar. Os resultados são discutidos tendo em conta as especifi cidades da interação mãe-criança e pai-criança e o seu efeito no desenvolvimento cognitivo das crianças.
