The isolated artery: An intrahepatic arterial pathway that can bypass the lobular parenchyma in mammalian livers

Abstract: Controversy persists concerning the distribution of intrahepatic arterial termination. Apart from nourishing structures in the portal tract, several authors have suggested arterial supply to some isolated vascular beds that bypass the parenchyma, but this was not verified morphologically. In the present study, the existence of an isolated hepatic artery unaccompanied by a portal vein or a bile duct was shown in livers of pigs and other mammals including the dog, seal, ox, horse, and man. After colored media in… Show more

“…For angiography devices, AXIOM Artis dBA (Siemens Healthcare ,Tokyo, Japan) 6 and Innova IGS 630 (GE Healthcare ,Tokyo, Japan) were used. CBCT was used because there were no functions of the Angio-CT in the angiography devices that are used at this hospital.…”

“…In recent years, balloon-occluded TACE (B-TACE) using a microballoon catheter has been reported as a technique to enhance accumulation of Lipiodol in HCC. In this technique, balloon occlusion causes development of collateral circulation in the hepatic parenchyma, such as peribiliary plexus, 4 interlobar communicating arcade, 5 and isolated artery, 6 and the peripheral arterial circulation is preserved.…”

“…However, experiments on dual perfused livers revealed the presence of arteriovenous shunts, with some of the arterially delivered RBCs reaching the terminal hepatic venules via direct channels without traversing the sinusoidal bed (Sherman et al, 1996). Furthermore, existence of an isolated hepatic artery unaccompanied by a portal vein or a bile duct has been shown in various mammalian livers (Ekataksin, 2000), favoring the parallel model. Therefore, it was chosen in the present study to characterize the disposition kinetics of common and specific spaces.…”

“…The mechanism by which blood flow is established between the greater omentum and liver was not fully clarified. The vascular structural similarity of the greater omentum and the liver, consisting of capillaries 2,13 , could have contributed to neovascularization. The results obtained with this experimental model indicate the possibility of new studies involving angiogenesis and surgical revascularization.…”
