The Interplay between Usability and Aesthetics: More Evidence for the “What Is Usable Is Beautiful” Notion

Abstract: With respect to inconsistent findings on the interplay between usability and aesthetics, the current paper aimed to further examine the effect of these variables on perceived qualities of a mobile phone prototype. An experiment with four versions of the prototype varying on two factors, (1) usability (high versus low) and (2) aesthetics (high versus low), was conducted with perceived usability and perceived beauty, as well as hedonic experience and the system's appeal as dependent variables. Participants of th… Show more

“…Each scale ranged from 1 to 20. Following Hamborg, Hülsmann, and Kaspar ( 2014 ), we did not apply an individual weighting of the scales ( Hart, 2006 ) because non-weighted scales are highly correlated with the weighted counterparts ( Moroney, Biers, & Eggemeier, 1995 ) and they show a high reliability in the German version of the questionnaire ( Pfendler, 1990 ).…”

“…This conceptual difference between manipulated and perceived characteristics of media content is an important issue not only limited to news (cf. Hamborg et al, 2014). Further, although not supported by the effects observed by KWK, we asked whether suspense would also mediate a potential correlation between the perceived likelihood of a good ending of the news story and reading appreciation/lingering interest.…”

“…3.1 Goal of the Study e goal of the study was to collect indicators describing the validity and reliability of the developed P-SUS. Convergent validity, criterion-related validity, sensitivity, reliability, questionnaire completion time and motivation to complete the questionnaire were assessed in a lab-based experiment, in which participants first interacted with a smartphone prototype developed by Hamborg and colleagues [26], and second evaluated the prototype by means of usability questionnaires.…”
